It’s that time of year again – one of nature’s most fascinating displays. As The Guardian reported:
“Tens of millions of red crabs migrate every year in Australia’s Christmas Island. They crawl across from the forest to the coast in a journey that starts with the first rainfall of the wet season.”
As you can see, they are expected: roads are closed so the crabs can cross specially built roads and bridges to the water.
What a sight!
Here is a video that captures it:
Always terrific reporting by The Guardian – it reminds me of a wild moment I had in Cabo:
It was a feeding frenzy – click on my story to find out why these fish were so hungry:

This is fascinating! How do they know? That’s the million dollar question for many animals. How does a spider know how to make a web, and how does a bird know how to make a nest?
Animals have a different intelligence or instinct we can’t even begin to understand. The crabs don’t have much of a family life, but being abandoned doesn’t seem to stop the tough surviving babies succeeding on their path in life!
Hi John, this is so interesting to watch. I don’t think I’d want to lie down among them, but walking would be okay.

The red crab migration was famously covered in a BBC nature documentary some years ago. It was amazing to see them indeed.
Best wishes, Pete.
