Meet Walter Mercado! The Fascinating Story Of Puerto Rico’s Iconic Performer / Astrologist!
Do you know Walter Mercado? If you are Puerto Rican, you most certainly do – and if you were a fan of Astrology and “1-900” numbers and the “Psychic Friends Network” in the 80’s and 90’s, then you probably do as well!
“Cult Movie Monday” has the incredible, true story of one of the world’s most popular and unique entertainers!
It’s as if Sigfried & Roy and Liberace crashed into each other, and from the wreckage emerged Walter Mercado!
His incredible life story is told in an all-new Netflix documentary and Alex and I loved it!
“Mucho Mucho Amor!”
Here’s how Netflix describes this mesmerizing documentary:
“Dazzling and tender-hearted, legendary astrologer Walter Mercado vanished at the peak of his fame. This documentary poignantly explains what happened.”
And what happens is a bizarre and troubling story to be sure!
Here is the official trailer:
This terrific new documentary tells the story of Mercado’s rise to fame in Puerto Rico, and how he became a household name there – then around the world!
The documentary is filled with great historical clips and all-new material as well.
Mercado had a daily show where he gave out Horoscope readings…yes, it was one of the most watched shows in Puerto Rico’s history!
The film tells the story with EVERYONE participating, including Mercado – and you get an incredible inside look at his life – and his capes!
One of the highlights of the film is when Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of “Hamilton”, arrives to meet Mercado in person, along with Miranda’s father!
This scene really helps you understand just what an Iconic figure Mercado was – and the film is a loving story of a performer who was always positive, generous and giving – and how the business ultimately destroyed him…
Bravo to Netflix for picking this film up – and bravo to the creative team behind it – one of the best of the year!
Of course, Miranda has been in the media a lot lately – like this appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show:
Kelly had the original Broadway cast of “Hamilton” on her show – and you can see an incredible clip from it by clicking here:
Of course, “Hamilton” is one of the most celebrated musicals of all time – and now you can watch that original Broadway performance at home:
Disney+ has Lin-Manuel Miranda and the original cast performance from Broadway to watch at home – click here to see the trailer!

John, I have never heard of this guy, and his surgically-enhanced face is quite frankly scary! 🙂

He didn’t always look that way. He was quite handsome when younger. He was 87 at this time.
“A frail Mercado is carried out of his dressing room like Cleopatra on a golden throne, to be adored by his public one last time at an exhibition of his capes and jewelry in Miami. Nothing else would have been good enough for a life lived so spectacularly or a person gilded by magnificent capes encrusted with Swarovski crystals, whose wrists were ever adorned with gold and whose tapered fingers were ever set off by enormous rings.”

That all reminds me a lot of Liberace, who was my Mum’s favourite. Thanks, Dr Rex.

I don’t think someone should decide not to watch because of how he looks at 87 years old. The documentary is the story of his entire life and you see plenty of him younger in the way you mention…it’s a fascinating story
