Wine! Roman Ruins! Whisky Babies! My “Six Shot Saturday” Heads To Provence!

My “Six Shot Saturday” Heads To Provence For A “Whisky Baby!”

Welcome to the Chateauneuf du Pape wine region of France, located in Provence.

I started this “six shot Saturday” as a way to share pictures that take me back to a fun adventure I’ve had, and this one to the south of France several years ago was incredibly memorable for a few reasons:

Touring France and Provence

First, my wife Alex and I spent a week cooking with the legendary Food Writer / Cookbook Author Patricia Wells at her house in Provence.

She is located in the village of Vaison la Romaine, which looks like this:

Yes, medieval is one way to describe it – enchanting and timeless is another. As part of our cooking adventure, we shopped the town’s markets, then cooked with her. I loved the fish market we visited:

Along with our cooking adventure, we spent several days exploring Provence, including the ancient roman ruins at Orange:

We also saw miles and miles of vineyards along the way – we stopped by one near Chateauneuf du Pape to grab a few photos:

We quickly discovered that fruit flies are plentiful there – so we quickly jumped back in the car – luckily, no such problems when photographing the incredible olive trees:

It was after a day of sightseeing that we stopped in Chateauneuf du Pape and found a small cafe, where I was puzzled at first by the menu offering:

What’s A “Whisky Baby?”

Such a funny name – and as you probably guessed immediately, it’s a smaller portion of Whisky!

This trip was one of my early blog posts – more than 7 years ago! Here we are with Patricia in front of the stove that Julia Child used to cook on and gave Patricia!

If you want to see what it was like to cook with Patricia Wells – and yes, I got to make something on Julia’s stove, click my story here!

I started this “six shot Saturday” series last year with another incredible wine region:

This is the heart of California’s Napa Valley – you can see more of this area by clicking on my “six shot Saturday”:

  2. I remember your cooking post, John. Provence is a wonderful place, and Chateauneuf Du Pape a VERY drinkable red wine.
If you go back, I can recommend visiting Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Cassis, and Avignon.
    Best wishes, Pete.
