A friend who is also a movie lover sent me a link to this terrific story about a guy who decided to build a video store in his basement, which he called “Nostalgia Video”!
As someone who LOVED the video store experience growing up, it’s a “long gone” bit of nostalgia that still lives on!
Here is the entire 30 minute video from YouTube, an in-depth tour of an incredible shrine to a simpler time!
There still are some video stores, but they few and far between, run by passionate cinephiles who stock their stores with offbeat, unique cinema that you otherwise wouldn’t uncover…
CineFile Video is one such store in Los Angeles, located on the west side – and chock full of great films – all genres and all years!
CineFile stocks more than 50,000 titles for rent, and they say that’s “approximately 30,000 titles you can’t find online.”
I have NO affiliation with CineFile, I’m just a fan of their passion for film and dedication in keeping the spirit of the video store alive – and I love that they have offbeat films that I just won’t find online or on demand!
Here is a link to their website:
Take a moment an look online for a local video store near you – support them so that they can keep physical video alive!
Now’s the time to begin putting together your “hit list” of holiday movies like “It’s A Wonderful Life”…here is my list of the best ones to buy or rent this season!

“I’ll give you my DVDs when it’s torn from my cold, dead hands.” 😉 I have over 3,000 DVDs/Blu-rays, but I store them in aluminum cases (wife didn’t appreciate the fact that my collection took over one room!).

I have about 2,000 – working on a compromise to allow me to see them all…right now about 500 are the “best of” I have out, there rest are shelved in cabinets behind doors…

Since one of your photos featured this movie, in tribute to the post, one must now yell “Wayne’s World! Party time! Excellent!” 🙂

This is a fun idea, John. When I was a young girl, I built myself a library with a whole card index system. I still have a lot of the books.

I love that! I collected movie ads for years…books full of vintage newspaper ads that I am going to begin sharing as it was certainly “of its time”…as for your passion, I wonder if anyone even knows what a Dewey Decimal System is?

My small town in Illinois still has the video store rental store. It is a part of our past that seems hard to believe is obsolete! When Jim and I bought the Teardrop for camping, I was happy there was a CD player in it. It was fun to brush off the dust of some favorite films to take along on the camping trip.

I wish I had room to build something like that in our house! Most of my DVD films are stacked sideways on in bookcases. I can never find the one I want. 🙂
We no longer have a local video shop. The nearest one is over 20 miles away.
Best wishes, Pete.
