“In the end, the courage of women can’t be stamped out. And stories – the big ones, the true ones – can be caught but never killed.”
Ready for an incredible, true-life spy thriller? Ronan Farrow lived it – and wrote a terrific book about it!
Ronan Farrow is Mia Farrow’s son, and he’s a Lawyer, a former TV Host, and a Pulitzer Prize winner…and he has written the most compelling #MeToo thriller of the year – because it’s all true!
“Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators”
This Wednesday Bookmobile takes you on an investigative thrill ride as Farrow does what Journalists had been unable to do for decades: get evidence to prove that Movie Mogul Harvey Weinstein stalked and harassed young women and was a sexual predator!
Here’s how amazon describes the book:
In a dramatic account of violence and espionage, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Ronan Farrow exposes serial abusers and a cabal of powerful interests hell-bent on covering up the truth. At any cost.
And Ronan names names!
The book reveals, with incredible detail, that for decades, people in entertainment knew about Harvey Weinstein’s volcanic temper – and also whispered about his sexual misconduct. But he had never been charged – and there was a reason for that.
As the Amazon description continues:
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led Ronan Farrow to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.
All the while, Farrow and his producer faced a degree of resistance from his bosses at NBC News that they could not explain – until now. And a trail of clues revealed corruption and cover-ups from Hollywood to Washington and beyond.
This is the untold story of the exotic tactics of surveillance and intimidation deployed by wealthy and connected men to threaten journalists, evade accountability, and silence victims of abuse. And it’s the story of the women who risked everything to expose the truth and spark a global movement.
But the story was almost never told. As Ronan says:
“You know, the press is as much part of our democracy as Congress or the executive branch or the judicial branch. It has to keep things in check. And when the powerful control the press, or make the press useless, if the people can’t trust the press, the people lose. And the powerful can do what they want.”
One fascinating aspect of the book is how much detail Farrow gives about NBC’s reaction to his work…it plays like a conspiracy thriller – and in a shocking twist, Ronan actually appeared on Rachel Maddow’s show on MSNBC to discuss the book!
Farrow’s work never aired on NBC – and the book goes to great length to explain why. So it’s all the more shocking that Farrow would be allowed to appear on MSNBC!
As Ronan relates:
“I called Maddow, who listened, and said no one tells her how to run her show. And so it came to pass that, all through the two years after the Weinstein story, I appeared on her show, and never again on any other NBC or MSNBC program. Later, as I finished work on this book, NBC’s litigation department began contacting the publisher, Hachette.”
The saga includes elite spies from Israel and Eastern Europe, witnesses being intimidated, and incredibly strong women who risked everything to make sure their story was told.
Ultimately, “Catch And Kill” is a fascinating and disturbing look at truth, cover ups, and the powerful – and what’s at risk when you take on that power…
Two New York Times Reporter, Jodi Kantor and Meghan Twoey, also published their account of what it took to capture this story in their bestseller just published called “She Said.”
Rose McGowan also published her memoir regarding Weinstein’s conduct against her called “Brave.”
I read all of these books – and each one is powerful and well done.
FYI, Weinstein is currently fighting all of these charges in court.
All three of these books are real-life thrillers – and all worthy of a read – just as this one was:
Reporter Jake Adelstein wrote a memoir about his job writing about Japanese crime lords in Tokyo – and how it almost got him killed!

The Harvey Weinstein verdict was revealed today, but this terrific true-life thriller tells the story of his behavior and the cover up that protected him for so long

This one sounds so interesting John. So many men with wealth and power get away with unacceptable behaviour. Good on Farrow for writing an exposé.

What really makes the book so explosive is how much information he uncovered, and the powerful men who were trying to cover it up – and what they did to the victims to shut them up…it’s a masterful work of investigative reporting. Thanks for commenting!

I plan on catching up with Ronan’s work soon. And I second the nomination of Jake Adelstein’s book. That memoir was something.

If the subject matter is of interest, it’s explosive and incredibly well-written…the entire #MeToo movement started with Harvey Weinstein, and to read about the people he hurt and harassed for decades…a powerful book!
