Pearl Jam “Black!” My “Sunday Song” Has Powerful, Haunting Lyrics! Visit The Pearl Jam Suite!

Pearl Jam’s Incredible Debut Album!

It’s Sunday, so time to share a hauntingly beautiful “Sunday Song” from Pearl Jam’s debut album TEN.

TEN was released in August of 1991. As wikipedia notes:

“Following the disbanding of bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard’s previous group Mother Love Bone, the two recruited vocalist Eddie Vedder, guitarist Mike McCready, and drummer Dave Krusen to form Pearl Jam in 1990. Most of the songs began as instrumental jams, to which Vedder added lyrics about topics such as depression, homelessness, and abuse.”

It is, without a doubt, one of the most brilliant and powerful debut albums of all time, ushering in the era of “grunge” that included incredible music from Nirvana, Soundgarten and Metallica among many others.

The album TEN produced three hit singles: “Alive”, “Even Flow”, and “Jeremy” – but the song I want to focus on is, to me, the most hauntingly beautiful song on the album:

Look at those lyrics…they are the final words in a song that speaks of a lost love and a yearning that tears you apart:

“Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did
All five horizons revolved around her soul as the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn, ooh”

As for the closing lyrics:

“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life
I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky, but why
Why, why can’t it be, oh can’t it be mine?”

Hauntingly beautiful…

Here is the band performing “Black” live very early on – this video has been seen more than 51-million times…

Director Cameron Crowe made an incredible documentary that told the story of how the band came together, and how they have lasted more then twenty years – and still going strong…

“Pearl Jam Twenty” is a candid, honest, and fascinating documentary about the band – with incredible home movies, illuminating interviews, and of course, great music!

Here is the trailer:

As a Pearl Jam fan, and being born and raised in Seattle, it was only natural that my wife Alex and I would end up in the Pearl Jam Suite at the legendary Edgewater Inn!

From vintage Pearl Jam tour posters to handwritten lyrics from Eddie Vedder, to your own guitar and amp to play, the Pearl Jam Suite is incredible!

  3. I wasn’t allowed to play the clips this time. The lyrics are excellent, but I was never too much of a fan of those Seattle ‘grunge’ bands, in all honesty.
    Best wishes, Pete.
