Perth’s Pee Problem! “What The Friday?!?!?!”
“Instagram-worthy, that is all.”
That headline from Newser caught my attention – and I discovered that Perth Australia has a “pee” problem caused by this gorgeous boathouse that is indeed “Instagram-worthy” – causing me to exclaim: “What The Friday?!?!?!”
You see, this Perth Australia attraction, known as the Crawley Edge Boathouse, sits peacefully on the Swan River, and is “the most photographed travel attraction” in the city according to CNN.
And that has caused a “pee” problem!
Welcome To Perth!
“What The Friday” is headed down under to the beautiful city of Perth Australia to find out what’s up with this boathouse, and why it’s the center of a “pee” controversy.
Perth is the capital and largest city in Western Australia. It’s also the fourth-most populous city in Australia, with just over two million residents.
The “Crawley Edge Boatshed” Is TOO Popular!
As noted above, the most photographed spot in the city has proven to be this gorgeous boat shed. The problem is that the Crawley Edge Boatshed draws massive crowds each year to photograph its natural beauty – and there are no bathrooms anywhere nearby!
The City’s $278,000 Solution!
According to Newser, after local businesses complained, the city stepped in to solve the problem quickly:
“The Perth City Council in late May approved funding for the installation of a solar-powered toilet, at a cost of $278,000. The council cited complaints from a nearby restaurant owner who said visitors were increasingly using his facilities at a cost to him, and that there had been incidents of vandalism and verbal abuse involving them. The new toilet is expected to be completed by August.”
Pee Crisis Averted!
Bravo to Perth for solving this issue quickly! I can understand how disruptive this could be, and wherever there are popular tourist sites, it’s important to have facilities nearby to handle the crowds!
It’s another example of how natural beauty can create problems when too many people want to see something up close…remember the issues recently with “Pig Beach?”
Yes, the famous “pig beach” in The Bahamas had an issue with the swine being poisoned – they are trying to determine if it was intentional or accidental – caused by too many people on the beach with them…they are working to solve the problem and restore this popular tourist destination, and you can read the whole story by clicking here:
Let me know if you’ve ever been to Perth Australia to see this gorgeous boatshed!

Very ingenious. Speaking about bathroom problems – we experienced this in Paris. We could never find a toilet to use – the restaurants were not always willing to let us use their facilities.

Yes, they are notorious for not letting people in who aren’t dining there…and I’ve never been a fan of those public ones in the middle of the sidewalk either!

Totally agree – though we did not see many of those that were actually working! It is something the city really needs to work on.

Well it certainly is a pretty boatshed! But if I traveled all the way to Australia, I’m not sure it would be on my must-see list! Nice to know there will be a toilet there if I change my mind! 😉

Solar powered toilet? First time I’ve come across one of those, too! x

I know…why does it cost so much? I assume it must take care of a LOT of people!

I must be honest, John, I try and avoid places that don’t have toilets. London could take a leaf out of Australia’s book as there seems to be a big shortage of toilets in London when I am there.

Yes Robbie, when they want tourists, they need to understand how to provide services!

It seems like a lot of money, but it is a very attractive boat-house. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

I was a bit surprised that it cost so much for a single toilet, especially powered by the sun!
