Ever Heard Of This “Love Machine”?
In an era of “Fifty Shade Of Grey” Mania, it’s worth remembering previous attempts to put sex on the screen!
Time to look back on “The Love Machine”, which was also a publishing phenomenon in 1969 – and was widely considered one of the worst films ever made – a disastrous adaptation of a pulp-y piece of best-selling fiction by Jacqueline Susann, Author of such “classics” as “Once Is Not Enough” and “Valley Of The Dolls!”
Yes, “The Love Machine” was one of the biggest movie bombs of 1971 – does it deserve it?
Check out the trailer!
Here is the story of “The Love Machine”: Robin Stone is an ambitious, sex driven TV news anchor who loves women – and boy do they love him as well!
Naturally, this stud catches the eye of Judith Austin, the wife of the Network boss. A torrid affair ensues and this “love machine” soon has more than he can handle!
John Phillip Law was “The Love Machine”, looking very much like an “American Psycho” Christian Bale…this film was supposed to make him a superstar, but the huge box office bomb did just the opposite…
Dyan Cannon also starred in the film, which was clearly the “Fifty Shades” of its day.
The source novel sold 4½ million paperback copies in one month and set all-time records as a hard-cover book!
Of course, “The Love Machine” wasn’t the first or last attempt to sell sex….how about this obscure action adventure from the late 70’s…
“The Man From S*E*X!”
Oh, by the way, “S*E*X” stands for *Society for Experimental Xenogenesis!
You can only imagine the quality of this movie if the poster is anything to go by, and
Italy got into the act as well!
Behold Science “Friction”!
Yes, this 1977 Italian sex comedy was called “The Sex Machine”, and it imagined a future where, well you get the idea….so, as you can see, every generation has their “Fifty Shades”…where books attempt to make the transition to the big screen…an effort fraught with peril…in fact, here’s one of the biggest publishing sex scandals of all time!
“Naked Came The Stranger!”
