Welcome To New York’s 2025 Marathon!
This is Alex and I at the finish line of the 2025 New York City Marathon, which is underway as I write this – last year 55,000 runners crossed this line throughout the course of the day – and we expect as many or more today!
The finish line is lined with flags from around the world, and yesterday we walked it:
From our apartment, we can see Central Park West, where the runners end up after finishing…they get their freebies and meet relatives right below us – while the race ends just to the left inside the park…we will see them running all day!
Take a look:

Last year we watched throughout the day, then ended up going to dinner, knowing that the race would ultimately end before we got home at 845p…except for this:

Alex and I were walking along Central Park south, which saw 50,000 runners go by and turn into Central Park to the finish line…and we saw this young man walking slowly, surrounded by his family:

His name was Danzel. His sister told us that he injured his knee at the twenty mile mark of the race, with 5 more miles to go…so he limped it, with help from his family and friends…and we ended up walking with him the last half mile to the finish line as well, and we weren’t alone:

Even though the city was taking down the race barricades, they were also keeping the course open until the LAST runners made it to the finish line, which Danzel did, because he never gave up…here’s video of that moment I captured – look at all of the people still there to cheer him on:
Wow. We were so happy for him, and it shows that if you never give up, you will persevere. Bravo to Danzel and his family!
While the runners cross all five boroughs of the city – Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Manhattan, fans hold signs up to cheer them on!

They are inspiring and funny too – here are some of the best!
It speaks to the spirit of New York, which is NOT a “ dangerous hellscape” – and neither are Chicago, Los Angeles or any of the other “invaded” cities in our country.

There are so many magical moments to discover in this city, like this view from Brooklyn, followed by a walk across the iconic Brooklyn bridge!

It’s one of the best things to do when in New York – check it out here!
I shared this story of a night time view of New York while traveling across the bridge:

This was just a random shot I grabbed from a car we were in – and I kinda love it!
Here are more Marathon images and my giant pigeon encounter as well…enjoy!

Big wow for Danzel! Cheering on the last runner is huge. This is such a big marathon and an NYC tradition. How cool that you walked the marathon.

Well done to Danzel for not giving up. Did you walk the whole course, John? I love your pictures of New York. Maybe one day I’ll get there.

Stevie, New York is nothing like you may b e hearing from our conservative “news” makers. It’s full of life, friendly, fun, filled with more than 40,000 places to eat too! I have walked about half of the distance and am going to be sharing that story soon…so much to see and experience!

Yes, it sounds great, John. A friend of mine goes there regularly. She loves it.

Well we know Danzel was a good runner because not everyone can run the NYC marathon, right? And it is so sad that his knee went out at the 20 mile mark- and watching his finsihing on the video was a heart tug.
Thanks for sharing and also thanks for all the beautiful shots of NYC… love your city

Thanks of the comment…we loved this “never give up” attitude…to have run so far and then go through that pain to limp to the end…

I just hope he did not do permanent damage…. and the knees are not always as forgiving as other body parts when it comes to healing

That’s a great point…the knee is a tough thing to heal…lots of rehabilitation and it’s painful too…

As a non-runner, I respect anyone who participates in a marathon. It’s funny that I love exercise but dislike running.
The “try dating in NYC” sign is hilarious.

The signs were really inspired! Thanks for the note! I’m a walker not a runner ( too many friends blow their knees out from the constant sidewalk pressure on them) my longest walk was 16 miles and yesterday in New York I will just under twelve miles and it’s always so fun!

Now I am pea green with envy looking at the position of your apartment! You ARE right on the park and have a bit of height > how bad does the noise get and do you notice pollution on bad days? Loved the post – just had our marathons recently . . . Sydney Harbour Bridge instead of Central Park naturally! Oh – love the photo of Alex and you in your autumnal gear . . . and hope you had a good ‘scary’ time at the Halloween concert also . . .

For 6 years, I lived on the route of the London marathon, in the docklands development at Rotherhithe. The London race is run in April, and our front door was right on the route, just over 3 miles from the start point in Greenwich Park. Every marathon, two friends from Kent would come to stay the night before, and we would put chairs out and watch the runners for most of the day, followed by hosting a boozy marathon day dinner in the evening.
Best wishes, Pete.
