Are These “Real” Movie Titles? Here Are Cinema’s Wildest Names!

See these iconic movie posters above? From “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” to “Forrest Gump”, “Jurassic Park” and “E.T”, these posters showcase incredible imagery that captures a film’s style, tone and plot – all in a single image – here’s another legendary one:

One of the most difficult aspects of making a film is not only choosing the poster art, but also what to call the finished film – after all, lots of us go see a film based on the title – so “Alien” made it clear what the film was about, just like this classic title and poster:

Jaws-movie-poster

Yes, “Jaws” pretty much nailed it…big shark, “JAWS”…and an innocent swimmer with no idea what is in the water beneath her – I’m in…and when a movie has a distinctive, iconic title, there’s not much more you need to worry about…here are more examples of films where the titles pretty much told you all you need to know…

The Exorcist movie
bloodthirsty butchers

Yes, THAT film’s title explains exactly what you are about to see as well! And in that vein of “this film MUST be as bad as it sounds”, I offer you this movie title:

i-could-never-have-sex-with-any-man-who-has-so-little-movie-poster-1973

“I Could Never Have Sex With Any Man Who Has Such Little Regard For My Husband!”

First of all, what was the year 1973 thinking when it released this movie to the world?

That said, the title is not only a very accurate description of the film, but one of the strangest movie titles of all time!

In this sex farce, a couple of aspiring swingers rent a summer cottage in Martha’s Vineyard. There they sit around discussing the pros and cons of having affairs!

Of course they do!

i-could-never-have-sex-with-any-man-who-has-so-little-movie-poster-1973

This was an actual movie that was released in theaters…and here’s another wacky movie title that was actually released as well!

Psyched By The 4D Witch!

“Psyched By The 4D Witch”!

Yes, it’s not only one of the strangest movie titles ever, but it was theatrically released as well! The early 70’s were obviously a gold mine for wacky!

worst films of all time 4D Witch

I probably don’t have to tell you this, but “Psyched By The 4D Witch” is one of the worst films of all time…read all about it and the “so bad it’s just so bad” film “Manos: Hands Of Fate” by clicking here:

While “4D Witch” will only be remembered by the people who made it, some of these strange movie titles had really big stars in the films – here is a great example – take a deep breath and try to get this movie title out in one sitting:

obscure dustin hoffman film harry kellerman

“Who Is Harry Kellerman And Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?”

What the? Well, this obscure 1971 film starred Dustin Hoffman as a song writer who cannot love himself, or others. So he spends his days with various women flying his plane, and dropping in to the world around him. Um, OK….

strange movie titles dustin hoffman

Dustin went on to star in some more mainstream movies with more straightforward titles of course:

x-rated midnight cowboy

Well, maybe not…but it was the 1969 Best Picture winner, so there’s that.

I wanted to share some of the funniest and most unique movie titles of all time – the films themselves may be good, bad or ugly, or in some cases, cult classics like this one!

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-A-Rama

“Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-A-Rama!”

This 80’s cult horror film starred Scream Queen Linnea Quigley, and was originally called “The Imp!”

Linnea Quigley The Imp

You see, a bunch of sorority sisters are trapped in a bowling alley, and are terrorized by the afore-mentioned “Imp!”

“Drive-In Cinema” had a great run of wacky titles – like this female-empowered actioner with the subtle title:

“Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle Of Death!”

Yes, it’s a real film from 1989 – and Bill Maher was in it!

For some films, a normal title gets changed when foreign distributors decide to tailor it for their local markets – like this!

We all know this classic – but if you saw it in some other countries, they renamed it to this!

Um, OK!

And remember this great Marvel film?

Well, overseas they decided to use this title instead:

Well, that sure rolls off the tongue, right?

Finally, there is this gem…if you think I am joking about this movie title, YOU ARE WRONG:

Incredibly strange creatures movie

“The World’s First Monster Musical!”

Yes, this is real movie! Time to embrace:

“The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!”

Watch this classic trailer for “the world’s first monster musical!”

That is one of the wackiest films and titles of all time!

That is, without a doubt, the most unique movie title I’ve ver heard…well, except for the others!

As for the iconic “Jaws” poster:

It ushered in the era of the “blockbuster”, and Hollywood never looked back – here are some of the greatest stories about the making of the film:

  1. Those one-word titles were the best movies, and the too-many-words titles were often the worst. It is definitely an art to title a movie.

  2. Yea, Willie Wonka sounds much better than the Boy who drowned in chocolate. Naming movies really is a science and art. I’m surprised that some big names kept the names they did. Here’s a few that just came to me. Shawshenk Redemption? To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar? Crash? Dead Man Walking? These last two are very appropriate names, but are you really going to get people to watch. Ha, ha.

  4. This is such an interesting post, John. I think short and sharp titles are best. Some on these are so long they are basically spoilers.

  5. Excessively long film titles can have the effect of me never wanting to watch the film concerned. I looked up the longest known film title (in English) and this 1991 comedy horror spoof takes the prize. Best wishes, Pete.

‘Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Zombified Living Dead Part 2.’
