What an awards season! Last night at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, “Conclave” threw the Oscar season a curveball by winning the award for best Cast, which is their “Best Picture” award!
Here’s how this Academy Award season is shaping up: the film with the most nominations, “Emilia Perez” implodes in scandal, and the other assumed frontrunner “The Brutalist” continues its slow fade – failing to win any of the recents awards from the Directors Guild, Producers Guild or Writers Guild.
“A Complete Unknown” has also failed to win any of the major awards, with the exception of Timothy Chalamet, who won the Best Actor award last night at the SAG’s – for those who don’t follow SAG’s, they have forecast 3 recent Oscar winners with this “best cast” vote: “Green Book”, “Coda” and “Argo” were surprise winners here before going on to Oscar victory…we will see if “Anora” overcomes this after being on a roll, winning the DGA, PGA and WGA awards: also, for those who don’t know, the Best Picture category at the Oscars is the only one on a sliding scale, so if a film receives all #2 and #3 votes, it can beat the overall #1 vote getter IF that #1 film also gets #9 and #10 votes as well from some voters, and word is that is the problem with “The Brutalist” – too polarizing for some…while it seems that “Conclave” has few detractors at all which can make all the difference!

When the SAG awards are presented, are the awards for the Oscars already decided and voted upon, albeit not announced? Or, do the SAG awards influence the vote of Oscar awards?
I will be watching the Oscars, and look forward to seeing how it all goes and who wins. I have not yet watched Conclave, that is on my weekend viewing. I’m looking forward to it, and possibly watching some other nominated movies.
You can't take the Scotland out of a girl... Reel entertainment reviews and more from that Darlin Husband’s Scottish, square-eyed and film-mad wife living in Finland.
Very interesting, John.
