“I Don’t Get No Respect!”
It was his signature catchphrase, but legendary Comedian Rodney Dangerfield got respect for being one of the greatest standup Comics of all time!
“That’s The Story Of My Life…”
Dangerfield perfected a deadpan delivery of jokes that always put himself down – always along the lines of:
“I don’t get no respect, no respect, no respect at all…that’s the story of my life”…no respect…you now my wife, she cut our lovemaking down to once a week…that’s nothing, two guys I know she cut out altogether!”
Rodney Rocks The Tonight Show!
Rodney Dangerfield was a salesman in the 60’s, who took his stage name in order to do standup comedy at night. After years of struggle, he got a chance to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show, and a star was born. His non-stop string of self-deprecating one-liners were hilarious. He ended up appearing on The Tonight Show 35 times, and Johnny Carson loved him…
Here is a six minute bit with Rodney on The Tonight Show – siting on the couch with Johnny Carson the entire time – tossing out non-stop one-liners and cracking Johnny up!
Dangerfield then made a string of hit comedies – beginning with the comedy, “Easy Money”- check out the trailer:
One of Dangerfield’s biggest hits was the comedy “Back To School”, when he enrolls in college to try and become closer with his estranged son.
Here is the classic scene where he angers his history teacher, the brilliant Sam Kineson…
“Oh…Somebody Step On A Duck?”
Finally, Dangerfield will always be loved for his role in “Caddyshack”…what was originally a cameo role grew and grew based on the comic’s hilarious ad libs during filming…
The film is legendary for all of Bill Murray’s ad libs on set, but here’s Rodney turning a clubhouse meal into hilarious chaos…
Recently, my wife bought me a turntable – I collected albums growing up, and managed to save 100+ over the years…as a friend said:
“You dragged those around for twenty years!?!?!?”
Well, I’m glad I did!
Yes, I have two classic Rodney Dangerfield albums!
Of course, his classic “No Respect” album – but did you know he released a rap song?
Rappin’ Rodney!
That’s right, Rodney Dangerfield had one of the first rap hits with his 1983 single “Rappin’ Rodney.” Here is the hilarious music video – the quality isn’t great, but enjoy the song:
Performing on The Tonight Show was a launchpad for many comics, and here a book that takes you inside Johnny Carson’s world…
Read some incredible stories about Johnny Carson, as told by his Attorney, described on the show as “Bombastic Bushkin!” Read more here:
Another comic who became famous thanks to incredible appearances on The Tonight Show was the late Garry Shandling:
Sadly, Shandling passed away – I took a look at his career and you can see his best moments here:
Of course, one of the greatest and most iconic standup Comedians ever was Richard Pryor:
His greatest work is still widely available, and here is a look at some of his greatest work:

He was so funny! I think his stand-up comedy, like appearances on Johnny Carson, were his best, but I loved his movies, too, especially Caddyshack. BTW, I love your Hi-Fi. You’ll have to write about your favorite albums.

Thanks for the comment! You know what, I will do that indeed – I have a few albums that were released in special covers that have become collector’s items! My wife and I watch some of Rodney’s old appearances on The Tonight Show and boy could he make Johnny Carson laugh!

That’s great, John. I’ll look forward your albums. I almost bought the naked John Lennon and Yoko Ono album, and it was snatched from all the stores the next day. For decades, no one believed my story that there was such an album. Here one day, gone the next. I wish I’d bought it. Yes, Rodney and Johnny were hilarious!!

And that is quite the collectors album indeed! Too bad the music inside isn’t! Thanks for the idea!

Exactly! The music wasn’t great, so that’s why I didn’t buy the album. After a gazillion years of telling people about the album, when no one believed me, our son took me to a record shop and rolled his eyes as I told ‘the story’ again. Low and behold the owner had the album behind a curtain, on sale for $500.00. At last I could prove my story. I’m glad I could give you an idea. Best to you, John. Sorry for the rambling.

My original Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti album, with “windows” on both sides of the cover with shots inside that could change based on how you put the jacket in, was for sale at a store for $650 when I was there last year!

I think the only thing I know Rodney Dangerfield in the film Caddyshack. I will have to go back and look through more of his appearances and specials as I don’t think I have ever seen those!

He was definitely “of his time” so some of it doesn’t age well, but he was master of the self putdown one liner…

What I liked about those appearances on The Tonight Show were that Johnny Carson slipped into the role of Ed McMahon when Rodney appeared and tried to set him up for his jokes.

I knew of him, and I have seen ‘Caddyshack’. But I don’t think he performed that much in England. If he did, I wasn’t aware of it.
Best wishes, Pete.
