Time To Take A Walk!
In the mood for a good long walk??
A REAL LONG WALK?
Well, grab some new tennis shoes because Popular Mechanics recently shared a post by Interesting Engineering – with what’s thought to be the longest non-stop walk you can take on the planet!
Yes, It’s 14,000 Miles One Way!
This map shows what is potentially the world’s “longest uninterrupted walk” from Cape Town, South Africa to Magadan, Russia.
According to Google Maps, the walk would take 4,492 hours to complete and includes 187 full days of NON-STOP, 24 HOURS A DAY walking!
For slackers like me, if you walk 3 miles per hour and walk for 10 hours a day, it would take you over 466 days to pull this trip off – that allows some time to see the sights, have some great food and drink along the way, you get the idea!
The world’s longest walk begins in L’Agulhas, South Africa, a gorgeous seaside town at the bottom of the world! They are proud of the fact, as you can see by this sign:
I think I’d have to spend a few days getting to know this area before heading north toward Russia…then, it’s straight up the continent of Africa, into the Middle East while you sort by the southern edge of the Mediterranean, and head into Central Europe…
Check Out The World’s Marble Capital!
If you took a quick detour to the right, you could head to Turkmenistan, home to the world’s largest collection of marble buildings!

OK, back on the road again – we still have some walking to do!
Let’s check the map again:
As you can see, once you get to Russia it appears to be quite the slog to the northeast, lots of walking to go until you reach the town of Magadan:
Welcome To Magadan!
Here is what you’ll find when you arrive in Magadan by the way:
Oh, and what do you pack for the world’s longest walk?
Popular Mechanics says you’d need to carry or obtain a wide range of gear: you’d need to be ready for the desert, the rainforest, extreme cold, as well as “body armor for the sections through anarchic or war-torn regions like South Sudan.”
Well, that’s some serious “food for thought” isn’t it?
Well, if I ever did this, it would be to see some of the world’s greatest natural wonders, and if I was in Russia, I’d definitely have to see this:

Thanks for this post, John. What a walk that would be, with every element along the way. The glass beach would be my favorite stop.

Yes, not sure how safe in some spots but just the idea is fascinating to me – thanks for the comment!

Now that is a long walk! You can always do like mom did, fly direct to Magadan from Alaska! But then that would spoil the fun!

I might be happy to spend over a year doing that walk. Not at the moment though, as too many of those countries are either at war or too dangerous for a lone traveller.
Best wishes, Pete.
