Let’s take a look at some of the world’s most unique houses!

Let’s head to the river first. Thanks to the great website “Curbed” for this one!

Serbia’s River House!

In 1968, Milija Mandić, nicknamed “Gljiva” (“Fungus”), persuaded his friends to help him build a one-bedroom swimmers’ retreat in the middle of Serbia’s Drina River. Materials were transported in via boat and kayak, while the bigger pieces were taken upstream and set on the water’s surface, letting the current do most of the heavy lifting. 

By summertime, the hut near the town of Bajina Bašta had become a sanctuary for young adults and vacationing students, and Fungus was so proud of the house that, when the weather destroyed it, he built it all again. 

And again. And again. The dwelling has been knocked down six times in the last 45 years — most recently in December 2010 — but the same Fungus Mandić rebuilds them all. At least, that’s how the story goes, anyway. 

However precisely it began nearly half a century ago, the place still stands on that same rock in the middle of that same river, a fact that earns the structure a spot on both the list of most the world’s most remote dwellings and the ever-growing list of awesome architectural oases.

Marlon Brando’s House!

Welcome to Tetiaroa in French Polynesia – the land of Bora Bora and Tahiti…Tetiaroa is located 40 miles north of Tahiti, and is actually an atoll comprised of 12 small islands. 

The island was made famous by the late Marlon Brando. The island is mostly undisturbed and boasts a tropical bird sanctuary, but there are currently no accommodations on the island – but we can all dream, can’t we?

If you want something with a bit more “STEEL”, then it’s time to head to Texas!

The Texas Steel House!

Artist and architect Robert Bruno has been at work on his steel home in Lubbock since 1974. Bruno has said that he wants the shape of the structure to be somewhere between “animal and machine.”

Popular Mechanics has this to say: “Most homes have an initial skeleton that is built upon throughout the construction process, but Bruno has approached this home like a sculpture, building it on the fly and making constant modifications. 

The four legs and cantilevered design minimize the structures impact by not disrupting the earth as much as a typical home design would have. Estimated weight of the structure is 110 tons.”

Imagine waking up and looking for the bathroom in this place! Too”closed in?” Then how about THIS!

The Bubble Castle!
Theoule, France

I found this as well online in a terrific Popular Mechanics article: Designer Antti Lovag long rebelled against traditional structures, and the Bubble Castle is a perfect example of his radical approach to rethinking the built environment. The bulbous compound sits on the southwest coast of France.

There are no sharp angles or straight lines in this unusual design. Lovag unified the home with its natural surrounding by bringing outdoor elements inside, including palm trees and a waterfall.
