A Neglected Daryl Hall and John Oates Gem – LIVE!
I have shared a number of stories about Daryl Hall and John Oates, who continue to perform for fans after decades in music.
From songs like “One On One”, “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” and more I will mention soon, their vocal harmonies are gorgeous – and just as good when they perform live!
I found this clip I shot in 2017, when they played at LA’s Staples Center.
Alex and I had second row seats – but who needed a seat as we stood the entire night, because the band sounded great!
While they played many of their biggest hits, they also took a moment to dive deep into their catalogue to share this hypnotic song called “Is It A Star?”
The song is from their “War Babies” album in the early 70’s.
Enjoy!
Again, it was an unlikely choice, but I love the song, and Daryl’s description of the song was interesting…but it was also a show full of hits, and I won’t leave you without sharing their most beautiful song ever!
I previously shared this live performance from the show – enjoy “She’s Gone”:
The “War Babies” album was not a success at the time of release – but there are a number of really great, autobiographical songs on the album including the opening track called “Can’t Stop The Music!”
Here is the audio of that song, which is the first song on the album and goes seamlessly into the hypnotic “Is It A Star?”
I have shared a number of stories about the duo, who were the biggest selling twosome of the 80’s…here are some of their greatest hits!
Even though they had a number of massive hits like “Maneater”, “She’s Gone”, “Rich Girl”, “Sara Smile” and so many more, they also have some great deep album cuts – see more of them here!
In a recent interview, Hall referred to a reviewer as “an asshole” for giving a tepid review of this album:
That said, he’s right of course – it’s a masterwork and here’s a look at the album track by track:

they would be so great to see live, and it’s on my list. I had forgotten what a deep list of hits they had. ‘she’s gone’ and ‘man-eater’ were my favs

Thanks Beth! They still tour and sound great…in John’s memoir he says he wrote “Maneater” after meeting a woman at a club one night and thought “watch out boy she’ll chew you up” which is a line from the song he then wrote!

You already know I’m a fan, John. Just yesterday, I was playing ‘Sara Smile’ on You Tube. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
