LA’s Wild Winter Storm!
This is what Los Angeles usually looks like in the winter: palm trees and wind surfers, even on a cloudy day…but not this week, when a massive freak winter storm left the iconic Hollywood sign dusted with snow!
It was wall-to-wall news coverage as m ore than ten feet of snow fell in the mountains just east of the city, and believe it or not, I watched a hailstorm out my window in Beverly Hills!
Hail began to pelt our house at 11am in the morning!
Here’s what I saw out our front door:
Our skylight was covered with hail – and since this is Beverly Hills, my wife and I were on our way to an advance screening of the Keanu Reeves film “John Wick 4.”
This is what happened in our car:
Trust me, this is NOT normal!
We ended up with more than 7 inches of rain that day – and the entire Southern California basin was disrupted by rain, snow and flooding…to give you context, this is what a normal morning looks like from our house:
That’s downtown Los Angeles from he top of our hill in Beverly Hills…spectacular!
You can see video of this spectacular sunrise here:
Even though Beverly Hills is right below us, we still are up in the Hills and that means we get visitors:
We have deer visit quite often – here’s a look at more of our 90210 wildlife encounters:
The L.A. basin has so many places to explore: from Santa Monica and Venice Beach on the Pacific Ocean, to the celebrity enclave Malibu just north.
I was in Malibu and had a fun Dolphin encounter as well:
Malibu is less than a half hour drive along the ocean from Santa Monica, and worth the trip..here are more of my Dolphin encounters:
It had me wondering:
How do they sleep?

HI John, we also had a freak hail storm last year December and it caused a lot of damage. Weird weather that is very worrying.

We had six inches of snow in our backyard last week, and it rarely snows here along the coast in northern California. It seems like anything goes these days.

weather has been so freakish all over! Hollywood probably didn’t know how to deal with it very well

Into each life some rain must fall. And sometimes hail, too! 😉

I love the photos, John. This was probably a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. It made the news here in New England!

It was something…we have more than 400″ of snow in the mountains – that’s our drinking water for the summer and fall so that’s good – just wish the rain didn’t come all in one day! Thanks for the comment!

Yes, the rain all in one day is terrible. Still, no drought this summer and those wildflowers will be wonderful. BTW, did the hail do any serious damage? Cars can be dented and windshields broken.

It was unprecedented! Never seen hail before and we’ve been in this house 23 years!

We see a lot of hail here but this isn’t Southern California!! It must have been quite an experience to witness it there!

I grew up in Seattle so it wasn’t new to me – but it NEVER snows in Southern California except in the mountains surrounding us, so it was a wild thing!

Must have been a once in a generation experience! I bet the kids of the area loved it! 😁

That’s crazy. The weather has been odd everywhere. We are having an unusually cold snap right now. 🤨
