These “Frogs” Croak Back!
First of all, bravo to the mad genius who came up with this masterpiece of a cult movie poster! Classic!
And in case you didn’t know just how “tongue in cheek” this campaign was, here’s a funnier version!
“Today The Pond! Tomorrow – The World!”
It’s one of my favorite movie posters ever – and it’s from a wacky genre of cult film where nature fights back!
“Shocktober 2022” dives into the killer animal genre of horror!
This helped me remember some of the great “evil animal” films of the 70’s, like “Piranha!”
Get one of the special edition blu-rays of this one – it’s a blast!
In this 1978 gem, directed by Joe Dante, when flesh-eating piranhas are accidentally released into a summer resort’s rivers, the guests become their next meal!
Here is the trailer:

Roger Corman was the master of cult cinema of that era – like this one as well:
“Humanoids From The Deep” is a pure blast of schlock horror as well!
Check out the trailer:

I once described a film as “cheesy” and someone was offended – until I pointed out I meant it as the ultimate compliment! While these aren’t technically animals, they are close enough!

And let’s not forget these furry new friends of Ernest Borgnine:

Before you denigrate “Willard”, remember its sequel “Ben” spawned an Oscar nominated theme song by Michael Jackson!
Click here for the trailers to both films and a clip of Michael’s Oscar-night live performance!
Also from the 70’s is this great “killer spider” film:
“Kingdom Of The Spiders!”
In rural Arizona, countless killer tarantulas are migrating through a farm town, killing every living thing in their path.
Here’s the trailer:
Look who’s fighting the spiders for us: William Shatner!
And while we are looking all all kinds of “scary animal” movies, it all comes back to the biggest and the best – Bruce!
40+ years on, “Jaws” is one of the greatest action/horror films ever made!

It’s as suspenseful today as ever – click here to see all of the fun behind-the-scenes moments as they were filming this classic!
Of course, the killer animal trend got started in the 50’s in the midst of the Cold War:

Check out this trailer, which uses atomic bomb tests as a prelude to giant killer ants!
And the trend continues – let’s give credit to the creative team who came up with this idea a few years ago:
“Zombeavers!”
Yes, it’s a great title for a “killer beaver” film, and you can see the trailer and more here:

Wow! There are some firm favorites here. I just watched Alligator a couple weeks ago and I was surprised at how well it held up considering its from the 80s. Black Sheep was intentionally hilarious and Squirm was unintentionally so!
They’re all part of what I call the Eco-Horror genre that crested during the 70s, and then petered out. I love 70s films but I still consider the 80s to be one of the greatest Horror movie eras.

I LOVE these types of flicks, but when I saw your headline “Giant Ants, Hungry rats”, I thought for sure you were writing about FOOD OF THE GODS and/or EMPIRE OF ANTS. There’s also the marvelously (bad/campy) giant killer bunny epic NIGHT OF THE LEPUS. HA! Thanks for posting.

Man, all of those are my personal favorites! I loved Food of the Gods when I was a kid.

I remember being dropped off for a matinee of FOOD OF THE GODS co-billed with OLD DRACULA as a kid. Ah, the days when double features were normal… I SO loved FOOD OF THE GODS as a kid.

I love giant, crazy, mutant animal movies with horrible acting!

Hi John, Jaws scared me a great deal as a girl. Rats, spiders and even beavers can be scary, but frogs don’t quite do it for me. I wonder if most people don’t like frogs, it’s usually the unpopular creatures that feature in horror movies.

Robbie, “Jaws” is the gold standard for creature horror to be sure…as for “Frogs” – that poster image doesn’t even happen in the movie – it’s a goofy 70’s “horror” film that just a fun stupid night at home! Hope all is well!

Thanks! The best part? The fantastic poster art doesn’t actually happen in the film!

Ha, that is like the TV ads for the high-end games that say “not actual game play footage”! 😉

John, I saw ‘Them’ at the cinema in London when I was in my teens. I thought it was really scary! The film of ‘Willard’ wasn’t as creepy as the book, which I really enjoyed.
Best wishes, Pete.

Yes, “Them” really shocked me as well because I was young enough to think it was real!
