Oysters Are Here To Save The World!
OK, perhaps a bit of hyperbole, but a terrific story at TheGuardian.com tells us how Oysters can, indeed, help the fight against climate change and rising sea tides!
They report that a new effort is underway to use Oyster shells to shore up the foundation of one of New York’s most threatened landmarks!
“Dozens of restaurants in the city are donating their oyster shells to support restoration projects like Living Breakwaters, a $107m effort to shore up the disappearing coastline of New York City’s Staten Island.”

The Guardian’s terrific story goes on to report:
“The project will consist of nearly a half-mile of partially submerged breakwaters, strategically covered in recycled oyster reefs. As those reefs grow, the project’s designers hope they will help control flooding and coastal erosion while providing new habitat for abundant aquatic life.”
Yes, a single Oyster can help save the world! Much of New York’s southern tip of Manhattan was built on top of tons of Oyster shells, so why not do it again?
