Waking Up In An Italian Paradise!

I’ve shared these stories before: small towns in Europe offering houses for virtually nothing – the only requirement is a commitment to restore them and live in paradise…in the photo above, Mussomeli Italy – and in this photo below in Sambuca Sicily!

Gorgeous, Right? Here’s My Euro!

Yes, they are selling house for a single Euro in some area of Italy – less than $1.40 – but there’s a catch…

The Washington Post has a terrific article about the fantasy AND reality of taking advantage of these offers: you can buy a home in an impoverished area of Italy for ONE EURO – with a promise to renovate and live in it!

“We tell people to come here first because we don’t want any surprises. We want them to know what they are getting into.”

That’s Tito Nigrelli, deputy mayor of Mussomeli speaking. There are some harsh realities to a commitment like this: the houses need work, and that take money.

Their goal is simple: to bring a new generation back to towns that are slowly fading away – but the reality is, some are in desperate need of major repair:

As these photos from The Washington Post story show, the properties are badly in need of repair. Yet as one participant noted, it’s still much cheaper than a “time share” in the US – and you are in the middle of the Italian countryside!

It’s a great article, offering a lot of reasons why it’s a “dream come true” for many, like Chef Danny McCubbin, who relocated, renovated and now has a non-profit restaurant for the community:
