Magical Santorini Sunsets! Here’s Video Of Nature’s Most Beautiful “Goodnight”!

Behold the Majesty Of A Santorini Sunset…

It’s one of the most gorgeous views we have ever had: sitting on the terrace of our room overlooking Santorini’s “caldera” – and seeing one of their magical sunsets…I want to set the stage before sharing some video as well:

Welcome To the Grace Hotel On Santorini…

Our Hotel on Santorini was in the small town of Imerovigli, less than two miles from Fira. The Grace Hotel is located on the steep hillside overlooking Santorini’s caldera – which is a large depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses.

You can see the outer shell of the volcano, now filled in with the Aegean Sea. And on the far side top right, that small hint of white is actually the town of Oia….he’s another look:

You can see the curvature of the caldera – there is a path you can walk along almost 7 miles of it…more on that in a moment, but let’s head back to the Grace Hotel and check in…

There’s Oia on the right again, and these are just the beginning of the steps you take to get to the hotel…cars drop you off at the top and then as you see, your Bellman carries the luggage down ON HIS SHOULDERS!

In fact, my wife Alex shared that exact point on Instagram that same day!

It’s a five-minute walk partway down the hillside before you reach the hotel entrance – and more steps!

Here is the video that shows the hillside once we make it to our room, which is about halfway down the caldera – when the video begins, that’s what we just descended to get to our room:

This is the view from the Hotel lobby, with the pool and restaurant below…we we in a room just below and to the right of that terrace, looking out with the perfect view of the rock – and all of the photo shoots going on:

That’s Alex upper left, standing on the domed roof outside our room – every one has one and as you can see, they are used for many elaborate photo shoots…more on that here:

The highlight of every day is, of course, the sunset – and the spectacular view from our room:

There are many ways to experience it – one of my favorite is my patented “upside down selfie”:

Alex also got me in our plunge pool with a glass of Greek wine, always needed to fully appreciate the view:

As Alex’s Instagram points out, it really begins to change the color of the sky around 8:25p, and last a full fifteen minutes or more before finally dipping over the horizon…here’s what the hillside saw at one point:

If you watch that video, you will hear me mispronounce Skaros Rock as “Stavos”….duh, but I do point out that people watch the sunset from the top, meaning they have to figure out how to get down afterwards!

As the sun was setting, we had to get a few more pictures from our domed roof:

OK, a fun shot to take – Alex holding the sun in her hands, but here’s the one I love love love – Alex toasting the sunset!

They say that every single Santorini sunset is unique, and we found that every night offered a different hue…always spectacular…and as for that hissed, it lights up after the sun goes down:

Such a magical place to stay, and the entire staff at The Grace is incredible…bravo to them!

The steps are even fun, a way to get a bit of exercise coming and going!

And as for Skaros Rock behind her: yes we climbed it – and it’s more dangerous than you think!

See how we did it here:

As for the view, you could see all the way to Oia, a terrific town with great shopping and restaurants – and you can walk there!

Yes, it’s just under six miles – and quite a hike at times – but we did it and here’s how:

One that nearly 3 hour hike to the center of Oia is finished, we went down another 1,000 steps for lunch!

The food was incredible, but the walk was intense!

See that adventure here:

I hope you are enjoying these Greek Island adventures – Santorini is an incredible place, with the nicest people, the greatest fresh fish and the most beautiful sunsets on earth!

  5. Those sunsets are magnificent indeed, and the steps are a great way to keep fit after the wine and lovely food. But I hope the hotel has a defibrillator handy, for older guests! I wouldn’t want to be a Paramedic in that town! 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.
