Celebrating The Musical Magic Of “Stage Mother!” My “Cult Movie Monday” Sings The Joy Of Acceptance And Love!

Get Ready To Raise Your Arms And Celebrate Life!

If you need to be cheered up – and don’t we all – then you need to head to your InDemand movie options and watch “Stage Mother” right now!

“Stage Mother” is a joyous celebration of inclusion and forgiveness, with an incredible performance by Actress Jacki Weaver, who plays conservative, Texas church choir director Maybelline…imagine her shock when she inherits her recently deceased son’s drag club!

She heads to San Francisco to take care of her son’s affairs – and discovers a whole new world! In the raucous, vibrant drag scene, she begins to open up and find new meaning for her life, even becoming a mother figure to the club’s flamboyant performers!

Here is the trailer:

This terrific new film is premiering on demand, which is the new world order in this #QuarantineLife – and is directed by Thom Fitzgerald. Starring along with Jacki Weaver is Lucy Liu, Adrian Grenier and Mya Taylor.

Along with the main stars are a bounty of terrific drag Queens!

The musical numbers are joyful and uplifting – but know that the film is brutally honest about how people who live this lifestyle are often ostracized by their families, which gives the film a real emotional heft.

By the way, they have beautiful locations in San Francisco, really bringing the city to life….except that it was mostly shot in Canada!

While there are beautiful exterior shots of San Francisco that capture its incredible beauty, most of the film was actually shot in Halifax Nova Scotia!

As the director said, “it’s a Victorian city on a hill overlooking a beautiful bay” so it filled in perfectly for San Francisco!

This is a really terrific, uplifting film, and as I said, something we need right now…and if you just need to laugh laugh laugh – head to Netflix right now for this:

“The Wrong Missy” is hilariously funny – even though very raunchy at times!

Here’s another really fun romantic comedy for you as well – with a very big star in a hilarious cameo:

WESTWOOD, CALIFORNIA – MAY 22: (L-R) Nahnatchka Khan, Ali Wong, Randall Park and Keanu Reeves arrive at the premiere of Netflix’s “Always Be My Maybe” at the Regency Village Theatre on May 22, 2019 in Westwood, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

Keanu had a blast playing a pompous version of himself, and “Always Be My Maybe” is a cute romantic comedy that is a great way to take your mind of of the pandemic…see the trailer here:

  1. I hadn’t heard of this one, John. I might have to watch it on my own though, as my wife is ‘creeped out’ by drag acts. 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Stage Mother looks like a great movie, one I want to see when the snow flies and I need a good, fun movie. Thanks so much, John!

  3. Stage mother looks like a lot of fun! I promoted ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ back in the day and had a ball. Wrong Missy was sour raunchy but funny, as you said. The Keanu movie looks good and I plan to watch it )
