“Six Shot Saturday” Visits Seattle!
Behold the majesty of Mt. Rainier!
For this edition of “Six Shot Saturday”, I’m in Seattle – literally, I was there last week – so I wanted to show you what an incredible city this is – beginning with the iconic Space Needle in the foreground, the 14,000 ft Mr. Rainer in the background, and Seattle’s downtown, sitting on the edge of Elliott Bay:
The Beatles Fished Here!
That’s right, there are fish in that water, and Fab Four actually fished out their hotel window here in 1964, thanks to The Edgewater Inn, which has windows overlooking the water!
Here are six pictures I have taken that give you an idea of the beauty of this part of the world:
Hop On A Ferry!
Because the city sits on Elliott Bay, you can take Ferries across to towns on the Olympic Peninsula, or just go for a fun ride! If you head north you become part of Puget Sound and ultimately, you will reach the Straits Of Juan de Fuca and the Pacific Ocean…here is a shot I took last week from that Ferry…
Washington state is as far north and west as you can get in the continental US, with water, mountains and lots and lots of trees…
Enjoy A Spectacular Sunset!
The sun set behind the Olympic Mountains, and when the weather is good the views are gorgeous…now, about that weather…
Most of the measurable precipitation in Seattle comes in the form of drizzle and light rain – and what does “measurable precipitation” mean?
Well, Seattle gets that about 150 days a year…yes, almost half of the entire year!
But don’t worry, there are enough things to make up for it – like the food!
Have Some Dungeness Crab!
Yes, fresh Dungeness Crab is the greatest taste in the world – a slightly sweet and briny meat that is great served cold with drawn butter…and the oysters are fresh from all over the northwest as well!
We love to eat at Elliotts, which sits right on the waterfront – but if you don’t like fresh seafood, you can enjoy one of the greatest Seattle institutions as well:
Eat At Dick’s Drive-In!
For more than 60 years, Dick’s Drive-In serves up a simple menu of a hamburger, a cheeseburger, a special (burger with lettuce and sauce), or the Dick’s Deluxe (two patties, cheese, lettuce and sauce).
The fries are freshly cut on site and made in front of your eyes…milkshakes and ice cream cones and that’s it – but that’s good enough for Microsfot’s Bill Gates, shown here waiting patiently in line outside to get his order!
Now that we’ve eaten, you should know that Seattle has many cruise ships that depart from here, some headed south to San Francisco, but most going north to Alaska!
Take An Alaskan Cruise!
As you can see by the shot of a paddle boarder I got from my room at The Edgewater, the ships are big!
There are mountains and trees all around Seattle, which is part of what makes it so incredible.
You can water ski in the day and drive to a ski resort in an hour – the city is literally surrounded by water of all kinds! Not only is the city very very green, there is, at the end of the day, the majesty of:
THE MOUNTAIN:
I didn’t take this shot, but wanted you to see just how beautiful it is – and when you fly into Seattle, you can see it often from the plane…or just go to the top of Queen Anne Hill and look back at the city:
When “the mountain” is out, nothing is more beautiful…so there you have it, a “Six Shot Saturday” from Seattle, Washington.
I’ve shared some other Saturday shots in the past, like this:
There is nothing more beautiful than a vineyard filled with grapes, and that’s what I shared from California’s Napa Valley wine region: see more by clicking here:

I also shared some shots from one of the most entertaining cities in the world as well, Chicago:
It’s a city that celebrates good weather as well – you can see my six shots by clicking here:

I have dined on oysters and other seafood in Seattle, where my brother and sister both live! It will not surprise you, I’m sure, that I’m more of a blue crab person, having lived in MD for many years. When my sister moved to Seattle from Cleveland, people warned her about the rain, but actually Cleveland has a higher average rainfall (just more at a time). It’s a good place to be a writer and stay inside, I think. But, they’re very hike-y and kayak-y out there. I’d be in line for a burger with Bill Gates!

Nice post on Seattle, John. I’m sorry, but Dick’s burgers suck. I’ve never seen the fascination with that place. I know the exact park you were in for your Seattle shot on Queen Anne. Looks like you made it up to the San Juans, next time let me know you are coming.

Great pictures. Share some more as you can. I love Seattle. Are used to drive to work looking at Mount Rainier all the way as my spirit. When I worked in Pioneer Square I would go to that Pike Place market every Friday to get my fresh produce and fish. Pretty hard to go there these days with all the cruise ship tourists. I tell people when I travel that it’s a big secret that Seattle doesn’t rain all the time.

Thanks for the comments! I grew up in Seattle and now have a bit of a love/hate with it when there…the downtown area needs some love and affection to bring it back

Dungeness is a place on the Kent coast of England, associated with a shingle beach, a nuclear power station, and the artist and film-maker Derek Jarman.

I wonder how Seattle crabs got that name?
It looks great to see the mountain, but I think I have enough rain to cope with in Beetley, without travelling to see more wet stuff. 🙂 And I have eaten lots of oysters in the past, but none from the PNW. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Great story and pictures John! I just had a Dick’s Deluxe burger this week and the fries are the best! Now for some Dungeness crab! Seattle will always be my favorite city, rain and all!
