A Talking Mona Lisa!
Everyone knows this image, right? The iconic, ever-so-slightly smiling portrait of Mona Lisa – and now it talks….
Wait, WHAT!?!?!?
Let me set this hilarious story up…
Paris is a city full of rich history and art – several of the greatest musums in the world are here, such as the Musee d”orsay, the Picasso Museum, and of course, the Louvre…you can wander for days and never see it all….
I used the panorama effect on my iPhone to capture Alex on both sides of one of the Louvre’s main halls, and then we headed to see the incredible work of art, the Mona Lisa…
One of the more annoying aspects of the exhibit now isn’t the crowds, which are to be expected – instead, most people don’t even get up close to admire the work of art; instead, the Mona Lisa is reduced to a backdrop for this…
The “Mona Lisa” Selfie!
Yes, this iconic work of art is reduced to a selfie, so I guess it’s no surprise that she has gone INTERACTIVE!
Yes, on our most recent trip to Paris, this iconic portrait was turned into interactive art!
Alex and I were walking by the Center Georges Pompidou, which a a modernistic museum in the Les Halles district of the city, when we came upon this:
Behold the “Talking” Mona Lisa!
In the courtyard outside the Pompidou in Les Halles, we cam across this huge outdoor exhibit – with a Mona Lisa that did more than stare back!
Here is the video – designed to respond to prompts from the crowd. Wait until you see what this Mona Lisa can do!
This was all part of a car company’s promotional scheme, located outside the modern George Pompidieu museum…and it was an eye opener for sure! The final touch was this “happy” response from Mona herself:

So, I am currently reading Dan Brown’s novel, “Original.” My first thought as I started to read your post was where is Robert Langdon. Have you read any of the Dan Brown novels?

Haha, there are movies for at least one of his novels. It was okay if I remember correctly, but I of course preach for the book first.

I have seen that something similar is happening in Dublin- talking statues of Wilde etc. Very entertaining!

Interesting — I kind of love seeing how different iconic works of art are utilized. I also think it’s really interesting to see how we interact with them over time… really, I can see people being somewhat underwhelmed by the Mona Lisa — I haven’t seen it in person but it’s SO all over the place that seeing the original isn’t necessarily going to have a huge impact on someone who doesn’t have an arts education of some sort. It’s a “I saw it and can check it off my list” kind of thing these days… I think.

Yes, the original painting is fairly small…and yes, it’s one of the things at the Louvre you have to see and then check off your list

Oooh that is so cool John! I think I like that more than the original.
I have to admit, I wasn’t hugely impressed by seeing the real thing either, but I did LOVE so many of the other ignored paintings in the galleries nearby!

Yes, we loved finding the “out of the way” galleries there, we were alone in many of them, and they were stocked with lots of great art!

Fun! I’d like to see it! Reminds me a bit of those talking fountains in Chicago! I missed the Louvre on my only trip to Paris long ago. It seemed overwhelming and time consuming at the time so we went to the D’Orsay instead, which I loved.

I found it a bit strange, to be honest. Clever though.
I am not actually a fan of that portrait, and have never seen what all the fuss was about! 🙂
