Todd Rundgren’s New “Power Pop” Classic!
Todd Rundgren has been making music for decades: timeless ballads like “Hello, It’s Me” and “Can We Still Be Friends” – but he was also a “power pop” visionary!
If you don’t know the history of “power pop”, you can click on my story here to see how Pete Townsend of The Who coined the phrase – and see a lot of great music videos by Todd, who mastered the art with such classic examples as “Couldn’t I Just Tell You” and “Determination”, to name just two…see them all here:
Now, let’s look at his latest “power pop” song from his 2017 album, “White Knight”:
“Maybe You’re Playing Checkers, Yeah, And I’m Playing Chess…”
This catchy phrase kicks off Todd’s live version of his terrific “Let’s Do This!”
Todd’s latest album included some great collaborations, including “Let’s Do This”, co-written with Moe Berg of The Pursuit of Happiness – which he played live in Portland Maine on 5/18/17:
Thanks to “Walkerbrothersmusic” for posting this on YouTube!
I love this song so much I want to share it again – this time performed on Adult Swim’s “FishCenter” – and Todd performs with his terrific bandmates Kasim Sulton, Prairie Prince and Jesse Gress!
Thanks to Michael MacLauchlan for posting this on YouTube – another great performance of this classic “power pop” Todd!
The entire “White Knight” album is filled with great collaborations, like Todd and Daryl Hall – click here to see the music video for “Chance For Us”:
A great “Philly soul” song – and Todd also collaborated with Donald Fagen of Steely Dan on the caustic political song “Tin Foil Hat” – see the video here:
Let me know what you think of the latest Todd’s slice of “power pop”!
