UPDATE: According to multiple news sites, the singer went into cardiac arrest at his house on Sunday night and medics were unable to revive him.
Tom Petty was found unconscious and in full cardiac arrest on Sunday night, TMZ reported. The classic-rock legend was reportedly rushed from his Malibu home to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, where he was placed on life support before it was eventually pulled. CBS reported, based on a quote from the Los Angeles Police Department, that Petty had died shortly thereafter. However, per TMZ: “Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom’s hospital room. We’re told the family has a do not resuscitate order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live throughout the day, but he’s still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer’s death is inaccurate—the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. handled the emergency.”
Petty passed away just before 9p Monday night. For fans who spent the day unsure of his condition, the news was devastating.
There really is no way to absorb this – he was one of my favorite musical Artists. Along with his band The Heartbreakers, Petty created some of the most popular songs of my generations: “Don’t Do Me Like That”, “Here Comes My Girl” and his solo anthem “Freefallin'”.
Here he is with The Heartbreakers performing “American Girl”, just one of his long list of iconic hits:
Petty was also part of The Traveling Wilburys, a supergroup that included George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. Here is a look at their classic music:
Heartbroken to hear of Tom’s death early morning here in the UK. He was the heart and soul of American rock for me, an awesome singer and musician without ego. Some of the best road music ever! I’ll be playing him loud today!

Pete, you have decades ahead of you – sadly, so did he – perhaps we will find out whether he was aware of any heart problems….

Lovely tribute John. I wanted to post something longer but after watching the news all day I’m completely drained.

You did the same – and I agree that it is devastating news…I was such a huge fan and he was in the midst of a tour – such a loss…
