The Larsen C iceberg has broken off from Antarctica!
The New York Times is reporting that the Larsen C ice shelf has broken, creating a massive iceberg.
The Washington Post also had a terrific and disturbing article about this massive iceberg forming in Antarctica, in an area known as the “Larsen C Ice Shelf”.
Here is their reporting:
“A growing rift on the floating Larsen C ice shelf on the Antarctic peninsula — a rift that grew dramatically by another 11 miles last month, according to a team of scientists watching it closely — is setting the shelf up for an imminent loss of nearly 2,000 square miles of ice, these scientists say. That’s larger than Rhode Island and almost as big as Delaware.”

This was on the BBC today. Apparently it is so big, that I would have to walk from here to Carmarthen in Wales, some 300 miles, to cover the same distance the iceberg encompasses. Phew!

Pete, whether this is good or bad to me isn’t the issue – it’s that there’s even an argument that it COULD have implications – here in the US it’s a political issue and that is so idiotic!
