This is a REAL “True Hollywood Story” – tragic
This film is currently on the “Retro” cable channel – a great cult 70’s film that was poorly remade as most of them are:
One of the stars of this great action film has become a shocking “True Hollywood Tragedy” – it’s the story of Jan-Michael Vincent, who starred in the most iconic surfing movie ever – and is now an amputee!
This is a real tragic story of Hollywood – and a reminder of the downside of fame…one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars is now struggling to survive!
UPDATE: Jan-Michael Vincent has died. Here is the story:

Here are words uttered by Vincent in the iconic surfing film “Big Wednesday.”

I had no idea he was in such a bad way. As I get older, I forget how old the stars of my youth have become too. I really liked The Mechanic, but never rated Vincent as an actor at all. The remake of that film (with Jason Staham) wasn’t half bad either.

What a downer. I have no idea how he became “tragic” but I feel sad about his loss of leg and his mental frame of mind.

It’s a slippery slope. I imagine how tempting it would be to make pacts with the Devil for fame and fortune. It’s a bizarre culture, for sure. Gilded.

I’ve worked here long enough to have seen many come and go…Tom Hanks once told me “never get too high so you never get too low…” I’m going to share that story soon – I ran programming at E! in the 90’s and got to hang out with a lot of stars…some great, some….

How fascinating! That’s amazing. I notice in previous comments you mention you edit and film. If it’s not too personal, what kind of work do you do in the industry?
