Wild Baby Elephants! Join Us On A Zambezi River “Sundowner” With A Large Elephant Herd!

Welcome To A Spectacular Zimbabwe / Zambia Border Sunset!

I am sharing a truly spectacular night scene from Africa! You are on the massive Zambezi River, which forms a watery boundary between Zimbabwe and Zambia!

As you can see, all day long the river is full of tour boats heading out to enjoy the river – and the amazing animals who wander along the shore and in the water!

Yes, we were joined on the river by a local Crocodile on the day we headed out for a “sundowner”, the best way to see the sun set on the river – and both countries!

Here is where our adventure began:

This is the incredible Victoria Falls River Lodge, located on the banks of the Zambezi, just a few miles upriver of the incredible Victoria Falls…you remember?

Victoria Falls is classified as the world’s largest sheet of falling water, featuring a, continuous width of 1,708 meters (5,604 ft) and a maximum height of 108 meters (354 ft). Located on the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe, it is over twice as wide as Niagara Falls, creating a massive, misty curtain often called “The Smoke That Thunders”.

Here’s a closer look at the double rainbow you see – and then watch as I pan over to the falls, which are so close to us!

This is the view from our room at the lodge: with a breathtaking view of the river – looking from our Zimbabwe side of the river toward Zambia – and one night, we were joined by our friends Colin Cowie and Danny Peuscovich for a “sundowner” river cruise!

We headed out onto the Zambezi river to head toward the Zambia shoreline, first passing a private guesthouse on a small island in the middle of the river:

We had some friends watching us as we boarded our boat – like this very well fed Crocodile on the shore right outside our room!

As for that private suite on the river, you can only get to the suite by boat – and our boat was crossing the Zambezi river toward Zambia’s shoreline, where a massive herd of Elephants were having a drink!

Here’s a closer look with video of the newest member of the herd: a month old baby Elephant! Check out how adorable they are!

I got this shot of a massive Elephant on the bank of the river, with a tour boat looking dwarfed…

The Elephants disregarded the boats for the most part – here’s more of the elephants on shore and the tour boats on the water:

Look how tiny this new baby is!

We spent an hour watching the Elephants and touring the river, a terrific with Danny and Colin – and with drinks of course!

As the sun began to set, we left the Elephants to take up our spot for the “sundowner”…with drink in hand!

It was a gloriously beautiful night, and we found a spot to have a drink and enjoy the view:

Once in place, we toasted and watched the sun set on the Zambezi river between Zimbabwe and Zambia:

An incredible night – after what was already an incredible morning – with this!

The four of us did an incredible hike along Victoria Falls – see all of the very wet video here!

One last note: remember this aerial view?

The Falls actually separate Zimbabwe from Zambia: you can view the falls from both sides and walk across the Victoria Falls Bridge to cross the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, but you will need the proper visa and a ticket to enter the national parks on each side

Here’s more of the aerial view when you take a helicopter to the Falls:

This was just one of our incredible safari adventures, like when we came upon SEVENTEEN Lions!

Or were there twenty? Watch as we try to count them all as they wander by our Jeep from all directions!

I want to remind you that all of these animals are protected – click here for the conservation efforts underway here!
