Have You Seen Tristan da Cunha? Here’s The World’s Most Remote Community!

🌍 The World’s Most Remote Island Community!
Far out in the South Atlantic Ocean lies Tristan da Cunha, an island so isolated that only about 264 people call it home.

Talk about getting away from it all – no other place on planet earth gets you further away from other humans!

The nearest human settlement, Saint Helena, is about 1,500 miles away from the island, which is nearly 1,750 miles from South Africa and more than 2,000 miles from South America. With no airport, the only way to reach Tristan da Cunha is by ship, a journey that takes days!

I also read that it is actually closer to the orbiting space station than it is to any other place on earth! Yes, their nearest neighbor lives in outer space!

I found all of these facts on a Facebook page.

Almost all of the islanders live in a tiny settlement charmingly named “Edinburgh of the Seven Seas.” They are descendants of a few families who settled here in the 19th century, and today, their lives revolve around farming, fishing, and small-scale trade. Supply ships occasionally bring goods, but the community is famous for its self-sufficiency.

Tristan da Cunha was born from volcanic activity, and its landscape is dominated by a central peak rising more than 2,000 meters (6,700 feet) above sea level. Though the island is breathtaking, life here is tough, with harsh weather, limited infrastructure, and total isolation from the rest of the world.

It is one of the most unique and remote places where humans have chosen to live, a true community at the edge of the world!

I love the remoteness of this! I have featured many who have lived a remote life, like this “Castaway”:

Lucy Irvine answered an ad in the paper and ended up on a remote island for a year…her book is fascinating, as is her followup “Faraway” – see them both here!

And here’s another amazing book: this Author managed to get permission to move to the “Mutiny On The Bounty” island – and shared the troubling story of life there…click to see more:

This Writer worked as a teacher on a south seas island – click to find out what “paradise” was like up close!

Of course, island living might not be for everyone – unless it’s only a part-time island!

That’s right: Sicily’s Isola Bella is an island twice a day – at high tide! Here’s what you see as the tide is partially out:

Yep, people walk across the sea to the island while it’s open! Click here for video of this gorgeous getaway!

  2. HI John, this would be a great place to visit. I would not want to live there though.

  3. Having been born an only child to older professional parents I very happily learnt early on to enjoy privacy for long periods – but I most certainly would not enjoy the distances Tristan de Cunha experiences from the rest of the world. Doctors, medications, books and other new possessions . . . ? Yes, I do remember the volcanic episode being all over the papers . . .

  4. I love islands, the idea of them, especially ones I have visited where no cars are allowed, but I think Tristan might be a tiny bit too remote for me!

  6. John, when I was young, that island was evacuated because of the volcano, and the whole population was moved to England. I remember it well, as I was 9 at the time and it was all over the news. They later voted to return, and almost everyone went back to live there.
