Wow! These “Movies With A ‘W’ Are Some Of My Favorites!!

From working girls to wild cowboys, angry robots to werewolves on wheels, this list of “ten movies with a W” has something for everyone!

Let’s get started with a terrific comedy with three great stars!

10 – “Working Girl”

This terrific 1988 comedy garnered Melanie Griffith her only Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Griffith is Tess McGill, Sigourney Weaver’s secretary – when her idea is stolen by her boss, she seizes an opportunity to steal it back by pretending she has her boss’ job.

Next up, a pitch black comedy about an estranged couple who goes to war with each other:

9 – “The War Of The Roses”

Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner are pitch perfect in this dark dark comedy from 1989 about a couple, going through a divorce, who just can’t agree on who gets the house!

Danny DeVito directed this movie, which is incredibly well acted from a razor sharp script. The fights escalate as they make the disastrous decision to “share” the house – by drawing square foot boundaries!

This is a terrific film!

Now, arguably Adam Sandler’s best film:

8 – “The Wedding Singer”

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore star in this sweet comedy, with Sandler a wedding singer who can’t find love himself.

One of the films many charms is the extended cameo by billy Idol, who does a terrific job at a pivotal moment in the film – and it was great to see him with all of his “Billy Idol” attitude!

Time to head to the 70’s for a terrific science fiction film that imagines a world of robots – “where nothing can go W-O-R-N-G!”

7 – “Westworld”

This is a great 1973 film based on a novel by Michael Crichton, who went on to write “Jurassic Park” – check out this terrific trailer:

James Brolin and Richard Benjamin are the friends who just want to escape to an “adult” Disneyland – but when the system breaks down, they find themselves stalked by Yul Brynner – a robot with a grudge:

6 – “Werewolves On Wheels!”

Thanks to my friend Jeff, I can share with you this 1971 cult gem!

Here is the classic trailer:

As you would expect, a biker gang visits a monastery where they encounter black-robed monks engaged in worshipping Satan! Werewolves ensue!

The original “Danger God” himself, Stuntman/Actor/Director Gary Kent worked on some of the wildest biker films of that era and said none ever lost a dime!

I just read his incredible memoir, and you should too – he goes deep into the stories of that era – I mean, his first job was “doubling” Jack Nicholson! Sadly, he passed away but his book will live on…

Time now to get off of the choppers and lead to the reception, thanks to a hilarious comedy that you should find in its “unrated” version:

5 – “Wedding Crashers!”

This raucous 2005 comedy starred Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Christopher Walken, Rachel McAdams, Isla Fisher, Bradley Cooper, and Jane Seymour.

It was a great cast up for anything – and the “unrated” version is even more hilarious!

What happens when these two “crash” weddings to pick up girls?

Will Farrell pops up late in the film for a hilarious cameo – a really funny film that never fails to entertain!

Speaking which, this film may be EIGHTY ONE YEARS OLD, but it is still as fresh, feisty and funny today!

Oh, and one more thing: it has ONE HUNDRED THIRTY speaking roles: and they are ALL FEMALE!

4 – “The Women”

Legendary Director George Cukor directs Hollywood Icons Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell and more. 

Set in the glamorous Manhattan apartments of high society, and in Reno Nevada, where they obtain their divorces, it presents an acidic commentary on the pampered lives and power struggles of various rich, bored wives and other women they come into contact with.

This is a brilliant, timeless film – cannot recommend it highly enough!

If it’s a brilliant, timeless western you seek, you should hang out with this “Wild Bunch!”

3 – “The Wild Bunch!”

William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Ben John and Warren Oates are the last outlaws in the west – being driven out by modern times – and the law.

Considered the most violent film of all time to then, it’s a bloody movie but so much more.

Director Sam Peckinpah went on to direct such classics as “The Getaway” with Steve McQueen and “Straw Dogs”, but he will always be remembered by me for tossing a hot bowl of soup on a friend of mine!

I’m a huge fan of great “B” movies with “A” list talent, and here’s a great example:

2 – “What Lies Beneath”

Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer dive in to the deep end of this supernatural thriller – literally!

Well directed by Robert Zemeckis, the story is gripping, the acting great and it’s got some great scares as well!

My final “Movie With A W” is a cult comedy that gets better and better every time I see it:

1 – “Withnail & I!”

Richard E. Grant chews the scenery as an out of work Actor in London at the end of the 60’s…his flatmate offers up his Uncle’s country home for a getaway – what could go wrong?

While full of hilarious moments, the trailer is just the top of the iceberg to what is one of the best comedies ever:

There are so many classic moments, like when Grant demands that a cafe bring them “the finest wines known to man, and I demand them now!”
