Here Is The “High Line”, New York, (1980s)

In the 1980s, the High Line was an abandoned railway track elevated above the streets of Manhattan’s West Side. Overgrown with wild plants and debris, it stood as a relic of the city’s industrial past. The quiet and desolate railway was largely unnoticed…just another decrepit slice of New York’s lower west side…..and here it is today:

Wow! The “High Line” Reborn!

That’s right: more than 20 blocks of abandoned, elevated railroad tracks are now a gorgeous park and walkway above the city’s traffic…welcome to The High Line!

Here’s the map that greets you when you arrive to the northern entrance…and what an entrance it is, beginning with “The Vessel!”

The “Vessel” is a new, towering structure and visitor attraction built as part of the massive new Hudson Yards development, which was built up from a decrepit part of the city to now tower over the west side like this:

The Vessel is an elaborate honeycomb-like structure which rises 150 feet and consists of 154 flights of stairs, 2,500 steps, and 80 landings for visitors to climb…after seeing that, head south from there and you will arrive here:

You can see the clogged west side traffic underneath the beginning of the raised High Line, which always has a piece of artwork to greet you! So I decided to have some fun with it:

And soon after, the bright red tree went away to be replaced by a giant pigeon!

Once you’ve seen the latest art, just head south on the path to begin a fun, relaxed and beautiful walk above New York’s west side:

The entire walkway goes just about 1.5 miles…always above traffic, and with lots of plants, art and cool new buildings around it…take a look:

The trail is a mixture of wide open spaces with lots of plants and art like this:

Then you will come to a part of the elevated path that is much more bucolic and a “world away” from the city below:

There are also some old railroad tracks still on the side…and looking back at Hudson Yards, you will see a unique building:

Behold “The Edge!”

Yes, that is an outdoor bar, perched 101 floors above the city, offering spectacular views like this:

Back on ground level, a walk along the Highline reveals another really unique aspect of New York: elevated parking! Look at these cars parked four levels high!

This is such a fun elevated park to explore – and at the southern end of the walk, you can see the Hudson River just a block away!

This is just another example of the ongoing wonders of this city…that can begin the moment you arrive by train into this incredible terminal:
