Have You Seen New York’s Colorful Subway Seats?
It was the “subway story” that shocked New Yorkers: the Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York – aka the “MTA”, announced that these iconic, classic multi-colored orange and yellow seats are going away!

What a loss this will be! Naturally, New Yorkers were shocked and saddened by the news! OK, let’s grab a subway and get more of the story:
Now that our train has arrived, let’s climb aboard and find out where these classic seats are going!
As The New York Post reported:
The MTA’s announcement that it will phase out an iconic portion of the fleet in 2025 has normally jaded straphangers feeling nostalgic over the loss of another piece of Big Apple history.
More than 1,700 subway cars dating back to the 1980s, known for their staggered, shades-of-orange seating, will be replaced by more efficient models with a lot more standing room — leaving some riders emotionally stranded.
One well known New Yorker shared her thoughts on the news:

“I will miss the colored seats … we all miss stuff once they change things,” Queens-born actress Debi Mazar told The Post, admitting to being “old enough” to mourn the loss of upholstered seats, last seen in the 1970s.
The Post goes on to report:
The “Goodfellas” actress, who once voiced PSAs for the MTA, loves her hometown transit so much that she once vied to compete in the “Miss Subways” pageant and wears an old subway token from her birth year — 1964 — as a necklace.

So you can see, the feelings for these seats runs deep! Here’s a video that captures them – for whatever reason, I happened to be on a train with no other riders at my end!
These are being phased out now, but it will take a few more months to finish the job, and it appears there will be a chance to own them!

An MTA “pop up” shopping event offered a chance for fans to take home some seats – I missed that one but truly hope I will get the chance again – because they would be great to have!
These “flea market” events offer up old subways signs, seats, and other collectibles – all items the MTA doesn’t need any longer…go to their website to find out the latest on sales and events planned – that’s what I am going to do because I want some!

Of course, I had to get another video of the colorful seats with my reflection in the train wall…I will miss these vintage seats!
I will miss these seats, but New York is filled with so many uniquely fun adventures like this, like walking over the Brooklyn bridge!

Yes, the center of the bridge is a pedestrian walkway and look at what you can see from there! Here’s some video walking across it and watch to the end where you will see the Statue of Liberty in the distance!
Here’s an in-depth look at the bridge and how you can walk it yourself!
It’s not my first “Hitch Hike” in New York – remember my 196 stroll through the big apple?

I walked 196 blocks, and the place it will take you, like the city’s magnificent Central Park…click here to see that entire journey:

They did the same thing with seats when they tore down the old Boston Garden. The seats were sold to fans, and they went like hotcakes, even with a hefty price. This must be hard for New Yorkers.

Thanks for that! Yes, fans dont like seeing them replaced but they are on the older subway cars which are also being updated with new digital signs and it’s much easier to see the stops you are on!

I’m sad to say I’ve never made it to New York but if I was a New Yorker I would be heartbroken to see the end of the bright coloured seats on the Subway. I would certainly buy one if I had the opportunity!!

Thank you for the comment! Aren’t the so retro in the best way? I am watching the MTA site for the next opportunity to buy some because they are cool! Thanks so much for the comment – always great to hear from you!
