An Inspiring NYC 2024 Marathon Moment – Never Give Up!

Welcome To New York’s 2024 Marathon!

This is Alex and I at the finish line of the 2024 New York City Marathon, which was held yesterday – 50,000 runners would cross this line throughout the course of the day!

So, as Alex pointed out to all of Instagram, we did not run, but one of her co-workers did and bravo to her!

From our apartment, we could see the runners finishing the race in a very woody Central Park…a process that lasted all day!

Take a look:

We ended up going to dinner, knowing that the race would ultimately end before we got home at 845p…except for this:

Alex and I were walking along Central Park south, which saw 50,000 runners go by and turn into Central Park to the finish line…and we saw this young man walking slowly, surrounded by his family:

His name was Danzel. His sister told us that he injured his knee at the twenty mile mark of the race, with 5 more miles to go…so he limped it, with help from his family and friends…and we ended up walking with him the last half mile to the finish line as well, and we weren’t alone:

Even though the city was taking down the race barricades, they were also keeping the course open until the LAST runners made it to the finish line, which Danzel did, because he never gave up…here’s video of that moment I captured – look at all of the people still there to cheer him on:

Wow. We were so happy for him, and it shows that if you never give up, you will persevere. Bravo to Danzel and his family!

It speaks to the spirit of New York, which is NOT a “hellscape” – and the US is NOT a “garbage can”…how could anyone vote for someone who says it is?

There are so many magical moments to discover in this city, like this view from Brooklyn, followed by a walk across the iconic Brooklyn bridge!

It’s one of the best things to do when in New York – check it out here!

I shared this story yesterday of a night time view of New York while traveling across the bridge:

This was just a random shot I grabbed from a car we were in – and I kinda love it!

Here are more Marathon images and my giant pigeon encounter as well…enjoy!

  1. I always try to catch a little of the NYC Marathon each November. It’s a great race, but even more than that I find there are always uplifting stories like this one. Cool that you guys got to share in the final mile. (And yes, I’m with you, it’s time to kick the garbage to the curb.)

  3. What an uplifting post. Hooray for the  Danzels of the world, who never give up.

  4. It is heartwarming to see such determination. Some years ago, a man wearing an antique deep-sea diving suit with weighted boots and a full metal and glass helmet ‘ran’ the London Marathon for a charity. He didn’t finish the course until five days later!

  7. HI John, what a great race. NYC is such a vibrant and exciting place. Not a Hellscape – weird comment to make about one of the greatest cities in the world.
