Warning! James Bond Ahead!
And it has come to this: moviegoers in London are being “warned” about the content of the James Bond films!
Shield Your Sensitive Eyes!
Yes, these films are now being shown WITH A WARNING!
As reported by The Guardian:
Culture warriors have heard a safety-catch being clicked firmly into place at London’s BFI Southbank for a forthcoming season of 60s movies – variously naughty, groovy and gritty – scored by the great composer John Barry: Soundtracking Bond and Beyond. The “Beyond” part means classics such as The Ipcress File and Midnight Cowboy, but obviously 007’s exploits are the main event.
Then, one last point made in the announcement of the series:
“Please note that many of these films contain languages, image and other content that reflect views prevalent in its time, but will cause offence today (as they did then).”
Yes, now the films include that warning to your sensitive eyes.
Before you start yelling at me, I understand that films from a different era have content that isn’t acceptable today….but 007? Really?
The Guardian, for one, didn’t like it, writing:
Do audiences need a trigger warning? Are they entitled to suspect something supercilious and self-serving in it? Do we need a trigger warning for the trigger warning: “Caution: the following disclaimer is a mechanical form of words typed out by a middle-ranking employee tasked with avoiding social media disgrace.”

Here is how it all began: the adventures of British Secret Agent 007 were a popular series of novels, and in 1962, Sean Connery starred in the first film based on the novels.
It’s a movie with a charismatic spy who has a “license to kill.” Here is the trailer:

I am going to do a review this year of every single James Bond film made…I am going to look at them as films, not time capsules….but I will give perspective if it helps analyze the films…I hope you follow along!
I will also review the Bond theme for that film as well, because everyone loves that battle as well!

With Cancel-Culture ready to be distributed at the speed of fingertips, it seems like some companies are often trying to get ahead of it – or soften the reaction, but I wonder if it just primes the pump? One way or the other – we’re talking about it – I hope people will go see them! I fixed an old b&w portable tv in the 70’s to watch Sunday Night at the Movies on ABC where they used to play all of the old ones, but had to sneak them to stay up past my bedtime.

Robbie, I received some pointed comments on FB from people about this – it seems that there are some who see anything they don’t agree with as worthy of censorship or condemnation…we have always had the right to support an Artist or film/tv/novel/music etc…OR NOT. Freedom of choice allows each of us to decide what we want to support or not, but many see if as something they have the right to impose upon others….thank you of ryour comment

Hi John, your expansion on the current attitudes in this comment is exactly what I am experiencing and I don’t like it. Everyone has a right to their views. If I don’t like someone’s view, I just don’t comment.

What’s funny is the bad language that’s in movies today was never heard in movies made before the 1970s.

That’s a good point…people have always had the freedom to decide what they want to watch – and what they don’t…I just don’t think that going backwards to judge entertainment from a different era is fair….virtually every single thing made would upset someone for something

Everybody is offended these days, and so CYA warnings have to be given. I’ve read that the next ‘James’ Bond is a woman. Ian Fleming would be offended for sure!

I’m all for reevaluating attitudes and customs, but this is turning into a clown show. It’s weird to see people advocating for censorship decades after the end of the Hays Code. In some ways, society is going backwards.

Yes, we can put them under a microscope and decide not to support them now, but trying to apologize for attitudes or behavior long after the fact is dangerous…who decides what is offensive or not? Thanks for the comment

This made the news here, but we already get ‘trigger warnings’ on older films shown on TV channels. A recent showing of ‘Gone With The Wind’ came with dire warnings about the ‘depiction of slavery and overt racism’. Some stations edit out the ‘N-word’ when it is being used by black people in films like ‘Shaft’. Others leave it in but issue warnings after each ad break about language and violence. Political corectness is out of control in Britain, even soap opears now show help and support information for ‘Anyone affected by the content’.
Adults need to grow up, in my opinion.

I have read about some of those same things here…apparently one network put up a warning for “Blazing Saddles”…sure it’s offensive but again, where do we stop? It’s considered a comedy classic!
