The World’s “Loudest Band” Is Back!
It’s official: the loudest band in the world is back! But this time they aren’t alone!
Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks have signed on to appear in the sequel to the cult classic “This Is Spinal Tap!
Director Rob Reiner revealed that the three musicians would appear in the long-awaited mockumentary sequel, which is set to film in February 2024.
As reported online:
“Reiner previously had announced Spinal Tap’s reunion last year, with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer all set to return as the band’s members. According to online reports, the new film will be modeled after Martin Scorsese’s the Band doc The Last Waltz — so should we expect McCartney, John, and Brooks to be joining the band on a blowout farewell tour?”
For those who don’t already love this film, here’s a look at one of the funniest films of all time:
“Hello, Cleveland!”
One of the most iconic lines in movie comedy history – as the Band Spinal Tap gets lost in the bowels of Cleveland’s music arena and can’t find the stage to perform…
And of course, there’s also this, when a band member admits they will never know what killed their drummer, who died by downing in vomit – someone else’s vomit:
Nigel Tufnel: “You can’t really dust for vomit.”
“This Is Spinal Tap!”
Arguably one of the funniest movies ever made, this is also the first and funniest “mockumentary” ever made, directed by Rob Reiner.
You know the plot: in 1982, legendary British heavy metal band Spinal Tap attempt an American comeback tour accompanied by a fan who is also a film-maker. The resulting documentary, interspersed with powerful performances of Tap’s pivotal music and profound lyrics, candidly follows a rock group heading towards crisis, culminating in the infamous affair of the eighteen-inch-high Stonehenge stage prop…here is the trailer for this comedic masterpiece:
Harry Shearer, Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest, and Michael McKean were given $10,000 to write a script for Spinal Tap. A 20-minute version of the film was made with the money to better demonstrate the improvisation they had in mind. Several scenes from this demo are in the final movie, and the entire effort is included on various special editions of the film…
“But These Go To Eleven!”
Most of the dialogue was improvised – kudos to the entire “Tap” team of Harry Shearer, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest – but this is now one of the most quoted film lines in modern movie history…
Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and…
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it’s louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it’s one louder, isn’t it? It’s not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You’re on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you’re on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don’t know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don’t you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.
And about those album covers:
“Intravenus de Milo!”
Yes, it was just one of the horrible Spinal Tap album covers – see them all here!
I have shared real album covers that were truly horrendous:
“Oh my” is all you can say – but they are also really funny and you can see the funniest one by clicking here:

I look forward to the sequel. ‘This is Spinal Tap!’ is hilarious. When my son played in bands he used to mark in a number 11 above the volume switch on his Mesa Boogie amp.

Spinal Tap is a marvellous film, but forgive me for thinking that a sequel might be too much, too late. Some classics are just best left alone.
Best wishes, Pete.

I think it’s going to be a parody of The Band’s farewell concert film “The Last Waltz”, which was directed by Scorsese…I agree it’s a gamble but hopefully if they stay focused it will work! We will see – cheers!
