The Case For Warren Zevon…His Complicated Life And Brilliant Music…

First, please click on Clive’s terrific look above at three of the late Warren Zevon’s greatest songs….the videos are in his story, which looks at how misguided the Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Fame is for not including him…

Zevon was a complicated Artist…volatile and unpredictable, but he will always be remembered for the song that Clive leads with:

“I Saw A Werewolf Drinking A Pina Colada At Trader Vics…His Hair Was Perfect”

That iconic line from “Werewolves Of London”, Zevon’s biggest hit, just scrapes the surface of his depth of lyric, wit and turn of a phrase…click here for my story of his career and his poignant final appearance on “The David Letterman Show.”

Having been diagnosed with terminal cancer, Letterman asked if he had any advice for people:

“Enjoy every sandwich” was his reply.

  1. “Excitable Boy” was the name of his album because he was ADHD just like in the Thomas Dolby Song “Hyperactive”, but I don’t know if Thomas Dolby is ADHD.

  2. John, I seem to have ‘missed’ his entire career! No idea why, as I had heard of the name, but never listened to his stuff. One day, I will have to catch up.
    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Pete, he had a great way with words….for example: “I went home with a waitress….the way I always do…how was I to know she was with the Russians too?” That “Lawyers, Guns & Money” another terrific hit of his…worth checking out.

  3. Many thanks for the link to my post, John. I’m glad your view of Warren matches mine: he may not have been the most commercially successful of artists but he was held in high regard by his peers. You only have to look at how many of them helped with the making of ‘The Wind’ and the ‘Enjoy Every Sandwich’ tribute compilation to see that. I’ve always loved his music and his albums are regularly played, almost twenty years after we lost him.

    • The memoir his daughter wrote is fascinating and shows that he wasted a bit of his talent due to other demons…but he was a consummate storyteller and it shows in his music!

      • I’ve tried looking for that. I thought I had it but the one I have is by Crystal, his wife. I’ll keep searching as I’d like to read it. And I agree that his music contains lots of good stories!
