Inside The “Madcap Motel!” Here’s Our Surreal Immersive Trip Into Pop Culture Madness – With Video!

Welcome To The “Madcap Motel!”

If you live in Southern California, you have until October 25th to experience a wild, surreal pop-up art exhibit, known as the “Madcap Motel!”

It’s a portal into a world of intense colors, art and surreal mystery…can you see my “self-portrait” in one of their pieces of art?

Let’s head inside the pop culture pop-up and see what awaits!

As their website states:

ENTER AN ALTERNATE DIMENSION CALLED ‘ELSEWHERE’ WHERE YOU CAN EXPLORE HIDDEN PASSAGEWAYS, UNCOVER HIDDEN ROOMS AND INTERACT WITH THE MOTEL STAFF FOR A UNIQUE ADVENTURE.

And unique it is!

Checking In To The “Madcap Motel!”

The exhibit is located in a cool, funky part of downtown Los Angeles.

When you enter, you are greeted by a terrific Front Desk Clerk, who gives you the key to your room – they are all the same by the way – and she sends you into a waiting area, but not before they explain the Covid protocols:

Inside the waiting area, a Maid emerges from INSIDE the fireplace and asks me to handle the remote control for the TV, while my wife Alex is in charge of the “antenna”:

Alex’s reception was perfect, and we were given some of the backstory about the “Motel” – a funny setup before we were related into the Motel grounds – here we go:

The light tunnel was next – a pulsating hallway with a hypnotic effect:

The exit door from the stoning corridor leads to the Motel’s inner courtyard: a lush space surrounded by doors – you are free to explore any room you want, although some lead to this:

There are a dozen doors, and we found one that took us into a surreal room of mirrors!

This mirrored room has ceiling lights that lower and rise above you, in multi-colored splendor, giving you this as you spin around:

clip

Yes, it made me blurry, and it also reminded me of my favorite iPhone “panorama” ticks: see Alex all around the room!

Another doorway leads to a darkened room that suddenly illuminates whoever is inside:

We then went into a room that looks like the inside of the “Alien” spaceship!

Another puts you in charge of your own moody fog machine, and Alex was eager to step behind the podium and take us to the British moors!

Another room offered one of my favorite pictures:

There are cool, surreal elements to all of the rooms, and you can wander at will to capture them:

One room even allows you to step inside a giant TV, which does this when you do that!

Yes, I did it as well, and while I may look ridiculous, and least I know it!

I admit, that was NOT HONORABLE!

I was ready to throw myself down this port hole, but Alex stopped me!

Back in the main courtyard, a dancing brush is your final bit of entertainment before you leave:

The last room before the exit is so special I couldn’t film or take pictures, but trust me: it’s also mind-blowing!

Bravo to The Madcap Motel – remember, only two more weeks before they shut down for renovations and updates!

This is just one of the interactive pop culture exhibits we’ve experienced lately:

Alex and I were submerged into the world of Vincent Van Gogh – this immersive art exhibit is terrific – see more here:

If you want some free Halloween entertainment, just head to Beverly Hills to see “The Witches House!”

It’s real, and it sits just blocks from the legendary Beverly Hilton Hotel and downtown Beverly Hills!

Oh, and since it’s Halloween season, why not come along as Alex and I pick out our pumpkins here?

Yes, “Mr. Bones” its back, and it’s a blast!

  2. Hooray! You got to go-go. I didn’t see the dancing bush on my visit…it must have been Elsewhere. Ha! I had no idea the place was closing. You’d think they’d wait until after Halloween at least. Oh well. Thanks for posting this. it was nice to have a “re-visit”. Cheers!
