“Losing A Whole Year!” Pandemic “Songs For Sunday!” Terrific Music Videos From Third Eye Blind! Police Parody “Don’t Stand So Close To Me!”

These “Songs For Sunday” Have A #quarantinelife Hook!

As the world begins to “re-open” a bit – with still much concern about a virus that stubbornly continues to wreck havoc, I have “Songs For Sunday” that seem written for our times, beginning with a band that wrote a song that seems to sum up 2020 perfectly:

“Losing A Whole Year” Indeed!

I love the song, but it sure resonates now, doesn’t it?

The band Third Eye Blind formed in San Francisco in 1993.

In 1997, their mega-hit debut album included this prescient song for our times today:

Given the months of #shelteringathome, this song title sure feels like it was pulled from today’s headlines, even as it tells the story of an angry young man who feels he wasted a year with a girl who:

“…never heard one goddamned thing I ever said!”

Here are the lyrics:

“I remember you and me used to spend the whole goddamned day in bed
Losing a whole year
Lying in your room we’d lay like dogs
The phone would ring like a joke that’s left unsaid
Rich daddy left you with a parachute
Your voice sounds like money and your face is cute
But your daddy left you with no love
You touch everything with a velvet glove and
Now you want to try a life of sin
You want to be down with the down and in
Always copping my truths
I kind of get the feeling like I’m being used
And now I realize you never heard
One goddamned thing I ever said
Losing a whole year…”

Here is the official music video:

FYI, here is what the band is named for:

“To be blind in the third eye, is to be deadened in spiritual growth. It means the third eye blinded have lived a life of total focus on the empty, finite lusts of the material world, instead of on the promise of eternal realms of life hereafter. The third eye blind are apathetic to and/or disbelieving of the spirit.”

Here are a few more of their big hits from that debut album:

“Semi-Charmed Life”

Talk about a song that announces a band’s arrival! This smash hit is catchy, punchy, and infused with a 90’s garage band energy!

“How’s It Going To Be?”

Like the song “Losing A whole Year”, this hit single also spoke of love lost, with gut-wrenching lyrics like this:

“I want to taste the salt of your skin
The soft dive of oblivion oblivion
How’s it going to be
When you don’t know me anymore…”

Here is the music video:

Third Eye Blind’s debut album was hugely successful, selling more than 6-million copies.

“Semi-Charmed Life”, “Jumper”, and “How’s It Going to Be” all reached the Top 10 of the Billboard charts. The group has undergone band member changes over the years, but still record and tour.

The 90’s was a time of grunge rock and lyrics like this one from “Losing A Whole Year”:

“I remember you and me used to spend the whole goddamned day in bed…”

Here’s another lyric infused with that “intense 90’s” feel:

“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life
I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky, but why
Why, why can’t it be, oh can’t it be mine?”

Yes, Pearl Jam’s debut album was also angry and raw – and brilliant as well. See the music video for the bleak anthem “Black” by clicking here:

Oh, and did you know that my wife and I stayed in a Pearl Jam Suite? And yes, it came with a guitar!

From vintage Pearl Jam tour posters to handwritten lyrics from Eddie Vedder, and yes, your own guitar and amp to play, the Pearl Jam Suite is incredible!

Click here for a tour of the entire room at the legendary Edgewater Inn in Seattle, the band’s home town!

My blogging friend also had a great idea for a song about isolating:

“Don’t Stand So Close To Me!”

It’s a rule we are all living by today, and someone modernized it for us!

You can see a great parody of the song here:

  3. Early in their career they came to the Springer show. I didn’t know who they were and called them Three Blind Mice when I was intro’g them to Jerry. They cracked up and corrected me. I became a fan thereafter.
Alex looks like a rock star!!
