So what is it?
A Nuclear Missile Bunker!
Yes, a nuclear missile silo is for sale and you can buy it!
As usual, the terrific Guardian website had the story:
This site for sale in Arizona was “an underground bunker built to withstand a nuclear attack, and to house the fire power to retaliate.
The decommissioned nuclear silo in southern Arizona was once home to the Titan II, the largest intercontinental ballistic missile deployed by the US Air Force.”
So how is it available for sale?
Well, apparently most were filled in and covered up, for not all of them!
The Guardian goes on to report:
The threshold to tour the property is much higher than for a typical open house. Interested buyers must prove they have the money to cover the $395,000 cost and sign a liability waiver before descending a 40ft staircase into the bunker to tour the property.
That’s right, you have to climb down a 40-ft ladder to access your new home! The Guardian story goes on:
The silo’s owner, Rick Ellis, told the Arizona Daily Star newspaper that he was selling the property because he’s “bored”.
Ellis said he originally bought the silo to turn into a commercial data storage center because it is shielded from electromagnetic pulses that can scramble electronics, but his plans were waylaid by the economic recession. So far, he said he has rejected serious offers from a buyer who wanted to turn it into a greenhouse for medical marijuana and another who planned to use it as a porn studio!

I’ll have to seriously consider this as I’ve always wanted an underground lair and this would be so much more convenient than hollowing out a volcano.

Yes, but that “volcano” lair in “You Only Live Twice” seemed to offer much more legroom…I took a cab in London once and the driver told me he was one of the stunt extras bounding on the ground during the explosions that went off in the climatic battle scene!

Climbing a ladder four floors in and out of my house doesn’t appeal, but I am very surprised that one of your many ‘survivalist’ groups over there hasn’t rushed to buy this potential ‘fortress’.

To be serious though, I suspect that anyone setting this up as a roadside attraction would have a health and safety nightmare. The first person to fall 40 ft down that ladder would sue them for all they had. 🙂

Yes, I could image someone buying it for that reason, but not sure the accommodations make it a comfortable life!

I must admit, John, that I find the pictures of the bunker rather eerie and frightening. I would not like to live or work in a place that. The clown is “kitch” but bearable.
