It’s The World’s FIRST “Glow-In-The-Dark” Ramen Shop!
Ready for a magical food adventure? Buckle up!
My son told me about a new “pop up” restaurant experience making its way around the world – as they describe themselves:
“An unprecedented, immersive dining experience showcasing high-end glow-in-the-dark food & drink, folklore, and storytelling, created by award-winning chefs & designers.”
And is it!
The Nakamura.ke Mobile Kitchen is a mobile dining experience showcasing high-end glow-in-the-dark food and cocktails created by award-winning chefs and designers. Unlike a typical bar or club, the Nakamura.ke {House of Nakamura} is a totally immersive dining experience including theatrics, storytelling, art, and folklore.
Over 1000 bowls of lumen ramen were served at their first pop-up location in early 2019 in Atlanta, GA. In May, Nakamura.ke’s world tour hit Charlotte, NC is in Los Angeles now..their website has more details, but London is scheduled this winter!
What really appealed to me is that the “pop up” was at Yamashiro’s – located high above Hollywood!
This classic piece of Hollywood history should be a “must stop” for everyone visiting Tinseltown – look at the views!
Let The “Glowing Ramen” Adventure Begin!
Once inside Yamashiro, my son Jeff and I checked in, got our tickets, and were given a drink to help on on the first part of our journey….
We descended a staircase and adjusted to the soft glow of the room around us…click the video to see how it looked to us:
Once in the “blacklight” room, we were told a fable of the family behind the neon noodles, with some very colorful imagery around us as well.
Ready For Some “Neon Noodles?”
OK, with the presentation over, it was time to enter the tiny neon ramen bar, where we were given our “neon” drinks!
Now, it was time to present our ramen: first, I was given fluorescent broth – click to see it in motion:
My ramen was presented in two parts:
I was given a board loaded with delicious ingredients: pork, ramen eggs and of course, my blue neon noodles! Now, it was up to me to slide it all in – which I gladly did – and Jeff got shots of the whole thing!
There you go, I loaded up my bowl and dug into this neon noodle goodness! As I said, my “neon noodles” were blue, and they contrasted nicely with the other fluorescent colors in the bowl!
As colorful a work of food art as this is, I also want to point out that it was DELICIOUS!
My son’s preparation was different – and so were the color of his noodles!
A fluorescent banana custard was a fitting end to the meal – the experience was a blast, the food was great, and it was all “food art!”
Jeff and I had a great time at Yamashiro, and love the concept of artistic food “pop ups” like this one…
I’ve had a love affair with Ramen for a long time, and recently ate at one of LA’s gems:
Yes, Marugame Udon in West Los Angeles serves up a delicious bowl of ramen – and Tempura as well! See my review here:

Well John, I find the concept silly but good food is good food.
Glad you enjoyed it

It was an artistic endeavor to marry the concept of storytelling to food…

Wow, that food is amazing, not sure if I would be brave enough to eat it.. Atmosphere must have been interesting. Those pictures of heads with food in looked freaky!

Yes, the “story” around the neon ramen was a spooky japanese ghost story, cool and an interesting way to take us into the food itself! Thanks for commenting!

It was a “unique” artistic environment to be sure, Robbie but you’d appreciate it because it was all part of the “mystical story”w e were told before the meal…they created a whole world!

I could have guessed you would be all over that culinary experience, John. 🙂
But did they tell you what makes the meal luminous’? I think I would suspect some strange chemical additives!
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, they don’t disclose except to make sure you know its safe! And you know what? For the drinks I didn’t even bother to ask! I figured the alcohol would kill it!

I was pretty sure it would be safe to eat and drink. They could never risk thousands of law suits. 🙂
