“Bread Stapled To Trees”! “What The Friday!?!?!” I Investigate This Reddit Phenomenon!

Check Out “Bread Stapled To Trees!” Reddit’s Latest Phenomenon!

This is one of the strangest things ever – and one reason I LOVE “What The Friday!?!?!?!?!”

If you go to Reddit regularly, you know that it’s the “front page of the internet” and has countless “subReddits” that talk about any number of topics….like this one:

“Bread Stapled To Trees!”

Yes, it’s REAL!

The subreddit “BreadStapledToTrees,” or BSTT, is a site for people to post and discuss photos of bread stapled to trees.

As my favorite travel site Atlas Obscura notes: the forum was actually launched in 2017 by a user who has since deleted his Reddit account.

But guess what? That doesn’t matter, because the subreddit has accumulated 214,000 members!

According to prominent BSTT member I_Say_Fool_Of_A_Took (real name Andy Chamberlain, who took the picture above), the founding user and his friend had originally envisioned a subreddit about “whole wheat bread stapled to trees,” before they ultimately decided that was too specific. Soon, they opened the floor to any kind of bread stapled to trees!

Atlas Obscura just reported that Sheffield England was experiencing this phenomenon…

Reddit User FluxOrbit wrote in a post that “people do it because it is random and weird, and for the fun of doing something so ridiculous and pointless.”

Makes sense to me! and it’s not just regular bread – people are doing it with bagels as well!

Thanks to Atlas Obscura for sharing this story – you can read all of it, with more pics and quotes from “staplers” as well – just click on their story here:

I have posted about Atlas Obscura before, because they love to explore the world’s many wacky wonders, like this:

The “Chicken Church!”

They found it, they shared it, and I am “paying it forward” – see more here:

I don’t think these “staplings” are causing any damage to the trees, otherwise I wouldn’t like it at all – let me know what you think!

  1. Great comments which made me smile and as always John you find so much from the sublime to the just plain ridiculous but it takes all sorts to make the world turn and I am sure there are some happy birds around.
As always a great post and it invoked comments…Job Done!

  3. What about those of us who are gluten free? That kind of bread wouldn’t survive a drizzle. I had no idea what I was missing on Reddit. Thanks for the laughs and info!

  4. That is SO weird. Thanks for the laugh!

  5. Am I missing the point of this? The only thing productive I can see from this as the birds can have picnics. 😉

  6. I don’t see the point of this – especially when there are hungry people who would love receiving that bread to eat.

  7. You have the most interesting posts! Thanks for sharing.

  8. I’ll agree with everyone that it’s a bit weird, and yes maybe a bit funny. But really, who has time for that!

  9. That’s just plain weird! Like leaving bread crumbs on a hike… it doesn’t serve any legitimate purpose. I know after I’ve spent all day making up a loaf of bread, I would be offended if someone wasted it on a tree.

  10. I don’t think the stapling will harm the trees, John. What is the purpose? To feed the birds?

  11. I doubt it is damaging the trees, but it is a waste of food that someone might be grateful to eat.
My main surprise is that someone hasn’t submitted it as an artwork for the Turner Prize! 🙂

    Stranger things have won that!
    Best wishes, Pete.
