Dyeing A Tradition! Turning Chicago’s River Into St. Patrick’s Green!
Chicago kicked off St. Patrick’s Day week in style once again, by painting their river green!
This tradition kicks off a weeklong celebration in Chicago, beginning with the dyeing of the Chicago river! It began promptly at 9a on March 11, when these boats began to spray green dye into the river…here is what it sounded like:
Thousands gather along the river to watch – and then it’s on to the first of many parades and parties throughout the city…
Kilts And Cans!
This is quite a day of fun in Chicago, as thousands celebrate the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day…people everywhere are dressed up in green and shamrocks like this:
This St. Patricks day parade is also a tradition, and happens after everyone has had a chance to see the newly “greened” river:
Here is another look at the celebration as the dye is distributed into the water:
After the spray down, then smaller boats stir it all in…the entire ceremony takes a half hour, then it’s on to the next celebration – a parade – followed by a day long celebration that lasts well into the night…
Here we are with Carrie and Nelson, capturing what will be a week’s worth of green-dyed fun!

Chicago is a fine city; I could submerge myself in the architecture for days and nights on end. Have a great time; I’m jealous.

It’s a beautifully clean city – yes it has problems, but you are right – the architecture is terrific and the river tours give you a chance to see all of it while getting a great history lesson!

Night time is magic. My hometown is 100 miles away. I’ve got a lot of great memories there.

Looks like fun! My daughter ran a day care for a while. On St. Pat’s she made a batch of mashed potatoes. In the bottom of the bowl she put a few drops of green food coloring and then added the whipped potatoes. The kids watched as she stirred and the potatoes turned green. They were amazed. Funny.
