One of cinema’s “wildest” visionaries….
johnrieber

A visionary Director speaks candidly about the moviemaking process, both in his own words, and in the dialogue from a film…

“If they move, kill ’em!”
This iconic movie line is from “The Wild Bunch” – but it also speaks directly to the Director’s view of life! Meet Sam Peckinpah:

Time To Celebrate One Of The Greatest – And Wildest – Movie Directors EVER!
Director Sam Peckinpah earned his reputation as one of the most visionary – and downright ornery – Directors of all time. His list of great films includes “Straw Dogs”, “The Killer Elite”, the “black-as-coal” revenge thriller “Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia” and his biggest hit ever, “The Getaway” with Steve McQueen…

He was, however, also one of the combative film makers of all time as well…and his career is littered with anecdote after anecdote about his corrosive behavior, both on-set and off!

Let’s look…

Hey to Peckinpah. As you know I just watched The Getaway. I liked how he made good use of the sounds to create tension. He’s a man’s man. I still can’t appreciate The Wild Bunch as much as the next male. Except for the beginning scene with the kids and the scorpion. His use of kids as a theme is interesting.

His themes seemed to revolve around the loss of innocence, and how violence and cruelty permeated our culture. I love “The Wild Bunch” but he made a beautiful, poem of a film around that time called “The Ballad Of Cable Hogue” that is remarkably different – and restrained!

Great tribute to Sam on both posts, John. I actually loved his Pat Garret/Billy film, and thought it was magical back then. I also liked most of the others, save for Straw Dogs, which I thought was just plain nasty, and rather pointless.
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, I own “Straw Dogs” and find it SO difficult to watch for many reasons…it speaks to a very ugly time in US history – we were at war, violent protests against racism and the war in Vietnam, and that carried over into a lot of the films that were released – meanspirited…that said, I also recently watched Peckinpah’s “Convoy” – awful film but a documentary with it had the entire cast reflecting on how crazy he was! That was great fun!
