I have been a casual Rundgren fan for years, but only now am I making an attempt to understand what drives him and his music on a deeper level. “Deface The Music” is the first Utopia album I ever bought, not understanding entirely what it was supposed to represent until I gave it a good listen. I think it stayed on my turntable for weeks: 13 brilliant songs that both stand on their own and also constitute a great tribute to the Beatles’ style. But I’ve always wondered what the former members of the Beatles actually thought about it. Did McCartney or Lennon ever comment on this or on Todd/Utopia in general, apart from that short pissing match Lennon had with Todd Rundgren in Melody Maker in 1974? Just wondering whether the Fab Four respected, hated, or simply ignored “Deface The Music.”

I think ignored, because in a case of distractors timing, it came out shortly before Lennon was murdered….
