Top Ten Toilet Moments In The Movies!

Thanks to Alex’s Mac Air, I was able to add the shots of the #1 best toilet scene in the movies! Check these ten out, then follow up with the ten “next best” as well!

In honor of the holidays, Alex told me to post a list of the top ten bathroom scenes in the movies. It was part of a discussion that took place during a long walk in the vineyards, as most of these lists are, so here we go:
10-Fatal Attraction. Anne Archer, still bandaged from her car accident, just needs a quiet bath while husband Michael Douglas cooks dinner. His infidelity seems like a lifetime away. The bathroom steams up, so Archer wipes the mirror with her cast, and voila, hello Alex! If you didn’t shriek as Glenn Close revealed herself, then stop reading right now, this list isn’t for you.
9-There’s Something About Mary. Ben Stiller doesn’t want to go out on his date with Mary with “a loaded gun”, so he takes care of the problem, only to discover soon after that….well, you all know what leads to the single funniest moment in movie history, the cutaway of Mary’s hair in the bar…and it all began in the bathroom…
8-Psycho. The most terrifying moment in film history, and a signal that the old, restrictive production code that kept provocative material off the movie screen was going to fall apart…by the end of the sixties there was full frontal nudity in mainstream movies, but this scene shows no nudity at all…but signalled an onslaught of frank and uncensored moments in film that hasnt let up. It is also one of the most parodied film moments ever.
7-Kramer Vs. Kramer. Dustin Hoffman tries dating while raising a precocious little kid, who wakes up late one night to use the bathroom – just as a female friend of Dustin’s – oh, a very very naked friend – is exiting the bathroom. An awkward discussion about fried chicken ensues…
6-Liar Liar – I know the Jim Carrey backlash is still in full swing, but this is a really funny film, with Carrey as a guy who suddenly cannot tell a lie. So, in the midst of a heated court battle, he goes into the bathroom to literally, as he says “kick my own ass.” Don’t forget a much more darkly comic self-ass-kicking takes place in “Fight Club” when Edward Norton does the same thing to himself, but that’s not in a bathroom, so let’s move on…
5-Full Metal Jacket. Matthew Modine is “Private Joker”, a Marine recruit finishing up his last day of basic training. He goes into the bathroom late one night and discovers Leonard, the hapless recruit who fails at everything except one thing – he sure knows how to fire a weapon. A shocking end to the first half of this brilliant look at Vietnam. The first poster was rejected By the Motion Picture Association of America due to the tag line – “In Vietnam the wind doesn’t blow, it sucks.”
4-Carrie. Another communal bathroom and shower scene opens up this brilliant adaptation of Stephen King’s first novel. Director Brian DePalma creates a dream-like fantasy environment over opening credits until, as Carrie’s Mom says, “first comes the blood…then the boys.” the second greatest horror film of all time, but that is for a later list…
3-Planes, Trains & Automobiles. If you are going to share a motel room with Del Griffith, make sure you clean up first. No such luck for Steve Martin, who emerges from the shower to find Del’s already been in there – socks soaking in the sink, A tsunami of wet towels and water everywhere, and nothing left to dry off with than a single hand towel. The look on Steve Martin’s face as he tries to dry off his entire body is priceless.
2-Dumb & Dumber. We all know this scene- a jealous Jim Carrey spikes Jeff Daniels’ drink, and shortly thereafter Daniels finds himself in desperate need for a bathroom, any bathroom – like Lauren Holly’s, who gives Daniels just enough alone time before she knocks on the door to warn him,”oh, don’t use the toilet, it’s not working.” Oops…Jeff Daniels is a great classic Actor, but his willingness to stick this movie between his teeth and bite down hard had him matching, scene-for-scene, all of Jim Carrey’s manic humor.
1-Trainspotting. Yes, it is officially known in the movie as “the worst toilet in Scotland.” Ewan MacGregor tries not to gag as he goes in to relieve himself, only to make the horrific mistake of dropping something into the toilet accidentally. He has no option but…well, you all know what happens. I know someone who wouldn’t see this movie just because of what they heard about this scene. Director Danny Boyle announced his arrival as a major talent with the brilliant treatise on drug addiction in everyday Britain…as the ad says, “choose life!”

Let me know what you think, and suggest a few of your own!

  1. I like this web blog very much so much excellent info.

  2. Trainspotting!!! One of my favorite movies! That scene is so good…and fowl! Dropping “something” in the toilet….amazing what they did with no budget.

  3. I believe Austin Powers also had a very long stint at the urinal when he was awaken after 40-some odd years.

  4. How did Lethal Weapon 2 NOT make the list?!?

  5. You gotta love Alex’s choice of topic, and timing. I think you made a good list – a little bit of horror, a little bit of humor, and a little bit of romance; in a way. Lol. Keep ’em coming.

  6. Great list, John! How about the scene in 16 Candles where all the geeky freshmen boys paid $1 to see Samantha Baker’s underwear, courtesy of Farmer Ted. 🙂

  7. Anthony Lombardi adds “The Godfather” when Michael Corleone pulls the gun out from behind the old-fashioned toilet and shoots Solozzo and Capt. McClusky…terrific choice.
“Nobody’s Business” reminded me of the scene in “A League Of Their Own” when Tom Hanks urinates FOREVER…both great additions!

  8. Something about Mary has another toilet scene that is arguably funnier than the “loaded gun” scene…. Ben Stiller doing his business and watching the pretty birds out the window when Mary, who’s changing, with her mom notices him staring. He tries to zip up in a hurry and so it begins. Franks and Beans!
