Up For This Hike Into The Heavens?
Yes, these intrepid souls are hiking along the side of a sheer cliff wall, wearing harnesses and attached to the chain link embedded into the side of the mountain!
Welcome to Mt. Huashan, China!
Mount Hua is a located near the city of Huayin in the Shaazi Province in China.
It is the “Western Mountain” of the Five Great Mountains of China and has a long history of religious significance. Originally classified as having three peaks, in modern times it is classified as having five main peaks, the highest of which is the South Peak at 2,154.9 metres (7,070 ft).
Here’s what it looks like to hike it:
Wow!
Mount Hua is also called Huashan, its literal name, and nicknamed “Number One Steepest Mountain Under Heaven.”
As you can see, this is NOT for the faint of heart. Some would say it’s not for anybody, but it’s packed with people willing to give it a go, helped by those harnesses and attached buckles!
See this terrific tutorial here:
As the video explained, the route isn’t that long, and you are harnessed in for safety…but as one very aggravated viewer posted in the comments, it appears at times the videographer may not be buckled up properly as he is shooting, and that would indeed raise the danger level significantly!
This athlete seems to be having a great time – the internet is filled with pictures like this one, so there must be a sense of safety even that high up on that short of a ledge!
Looks like safety in numbers is in player as well – what a lineup to get there!
I have shared a few of our most notorious hikes – like the trail near the top of Angel’s Landing at Zion National Park in Utah:
It’s America’s most dangerous hike and if you click here you can do up with us:
Plus we did a “Via Ferrata” – literally climbing straight up the “Iron Road!”
That’s my wife Alex and friend Merah ahead of me – a a spot where you literally have to go a bit backwards to crest that stone that juts out! And what awaits you on the other side?
This!
It was exhilarating and fun – and I did it on my birthday!

Here’s another wild hike I shared with you all:
This is the infamous “Stairway To Heaven” and it has quite a history!

And one incredible Artist made his own “stairway to heaven”, using fireworks! Click here for video of this incredible achievement!

50 years ago, I would have happily tried all of those. But definitely not now!
Best wishes, Pete.

Pete, I love adventure travel – but not when it doesn’t seem to serve any purpose whatsoever except to terrify you and put you in harm’s way!

I would be terrified. I guess if you’re harnessed in some way…. nah, too scary. I do love the virtual tour, John. Gorgeous!
Thank you.

I’d try it – but I would question that decision every step of the way!

Hmm, safety in numbers? I’m not so sure about that. I can be a thrill seeker and there are parts of this that look interesting, but the people all clustered together would worry me. It’s like when it’s snowing out. I always say that I don’t mind driving in the snow or ice, I just don’t like to be around any other drivers. If I mess up then, I’ll just be spinning on my own or hurting myself. If others are out, then my chances of getting hurt increase, because there are so many bad, crazy drivers. Ha, ha. Funny enough, I think I would be more worried about “Via Ferrata.” Looks like a major arm work out day! How’d you do?

Thanks for the comment! Actually the Via Ferrata wasn’t bad at all, because it is literally one iron rung at a time…you step every 50 or so at a new plateau, so you have a chance to rest…it was the part where you go a bit backwards that was a bit scary – oh and that swaying iron bridge in the wind! Thanks for the comment!
