Welcome To Paradise!

I always share tropical south seas islands when I discuss “paradise”, but that word can describe any idyllic getaway that offers serenity and surprise in equal measure – and that’s how my wife Alex and I felt about Comporta Portugal!

Located less than 90 minutes from Lisbon, the small town has incredibly pristine beaches like this:

Here’s how Condé Nast describes the area:

“The name Comporta, roughly translated, means a gate that holds back water, a lock. Which makes sense when you see how many canals there are. This is rice-paddy land. Great, stripey fields of rice, the biggest in Portugal, stretch all the way down the coast, sheltered from the stiff Atlantic breezes by sand dunes. They are kept green and bounteous by a crisscross of irrigation canals. In the heat of summer, when the rest of the country (bar the Algarve golf courses) is dusty and dry, this area still thrums with life.”

As you would expect, locals shop for dinner at the shoreline – we saw many intrepid fishermen out that day.

It’s a rural area that is growing in popularity because of the beauty of nature around it, and it was easy to get to – we hired a car to take us from Lisbon, and our driver suggested we jump on the ferry for part of the trip back!

Yes, there’s a ferry dock close by, and it takes youth Setubal, where we rejoined the highway for the quick trip home! It was so easy to board, and it was just over a half hour to take us to the peninsula just south of Lisbon:

There was a rain event in the distance which allowed the clouds to show off a bit:

Once back in the city, we had an incredible meal – which was true of every single day!

We had an incredible time in Portugal – while our entire week was based in Lisbon, we not only went to the beach but also to a wildly colorful Palace!

The palace at Sintra is incredible – so much history to explore!

We did just that and you can see it here:

While a car took us up to the Palace gate, we chose to walk all the way back into Sintra, about 2+ miles below us…the walk down was refreshing and fun!

Oh, and a fairly short walk down takes you to a Moorish castle, which we popped into as well:

Just as unique as these palaces and castles is Lisbon itself, including the incredible mosaic tiles that are everywhere in town:

There is beauty like this all around you – and as for the food:
