You know the face. EVERYONE knows the face. And this Friday, an older version is showing on on screen again!
He turned 91 years old this year. He’s acted in more than 70 films, directed 45 of them as well.
Clint Eastwood is one of the cinema’s most enduring stars: an Icon across so many genres – to celebrate his new film, which I will preview, here are a few examples from his SEVEN DECADES in film, beginning with the “spaghetti western” that made him a Superstar as “the man with no name”:
He has won the Academy Award for Best Picture twice, for “Unforgiven” and “Million Dollar Baby”, which also garnered Hilary Swank her second Best Actress award:
His career goes from action adventures to thrillers, dramas, Oscar-winning westerns, comedies and yes, even a Musical!
Everyone has their favorites, and not all were hits – but with the arrival of his latest film, “Cry Macho”, I wanted to look at a few of his most entertaining and provocative films, beginning with his most famous line all:
It’s the 1971 thriller that introduced the world to “Dirty Harry” Callahan, a San Francisco Detective with his own set of rules:
This terrific action thriller has Harry trying to find a Sniper who ends up abducting a school bus full of children – it’s filled with great action scenes, brilliantly directed by Don Siegel, who directed Eastwood in another film that same year:
And you know what? Siegel had a small role in Eastwood’s directorial debut that same year!
I take a deeper dive into all three films in this story about their incredible cinematic year of 1971 – click here for more on all three movies:
While Clint now mainly directs himself, there have been a number of great films where he put his trust in great Directors like Siegel – another is this 1993 classic:
Director Wolfgang Peterson directed this one – a great thriller about a Secret Service Agent and the psychopath who stalks him – check out the trailer:
John Malkovich and Rene Russo also stars, with Malkovich perfectly cast as the crazy killer who loves to taunt Clint:
Twenty years before, Eastwood starred in a great action film for Director Michael Cimino:
Cimino would go on to win the Oscar for “The Deer Hunter” – but this one is also a great film – click here to see more about it:
In 1984, Eastwood made a dark thriller that is one of his best:
“Tightrope”
Richard Tuggle directed Clint , who plays a New Orleans Cop who goes after a serial rapist-killer, but when he gets too close to the target, the hunter suddenly becomes the hunted.
Check out the trailer:
Eastwood’s films over the past decade have been a bit hit-n-miss to me, but I applaud his incredible output and look forward to seeing “Cry Macho!”

Favorite Clint movies: The Sergio Leone trilogy, The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Beguiled and Tightrope (underrated neo-noir). Favorite performances: Cop in Tightrope, Secret Service Agent in In the Line of Fire, Korean War veteran in Gran Torino.

Great choices…while I always “see Clint” in his movies, those that you highlight put him in nuanced roles that gave him a different vibe than “just Clint!”

Agreed. Same thing with John Wayne. He was great in She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Red River and The Searchers, movies that allowed him to play complex roles. 🙂

He is so good. And he even made the TV western, Rawhide, a must-watch for me, even in today’s reruns.

indeed! I seems that DeCaprio’s character in “Once Upon A Time IN Hollywood” is a mashup of Clint and Steve McQueen…both started in TV before breaking out in film

My mind always goes to westerns when I think of Clint Eastwood, although he’s proven he can handle just about any role. I loved him in The Mule!

I will never forget watching “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” at the drive- in movie theater. He has been a favorite actor ever since. “Kelly’s Heroes” and “The Eiger Sanction” are favorites. It’s hard to believe he is 91. Wow!

I’m a big fan of Clint Eastwood, most especially his modern Western films, like The Unforgiven, Josey Wales, and Pale Rider.
HBO/Max has a nice sized library of 20 of his movies on their streaming service right now, if anyone wants to catch up, so I plan to have a good binge session of his films the weekend that Cry Macho drops

Thanks for sharing that! I’m a huge fan of seeing movies in a theater, but until conditions change again, I’m fine watching at home..and to give HBOMax credit, they have some good original shows, and pretty good lineup of film, and mine comes with TCM, which is chock full of classic cinema! Thanks for commenting!

I am a big Clint Eastwood fan, John. I loved Dirty Harry. I also watched his Westerns. I have only heard the soundtrack to Paint my Wagon; I didn’t know Eastwood started in that.

Well done to Clint for keeping going at 91! I really don’t know how he does it, but he has my respect for his vigour and determination.
Nice tribute, John.
Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks Pete! I’m a bit “iffy” on his grumpy old man films of late, but he knows how to tell a story, so we’ll see…plus I have HBOMax so it’s free for a month!

A great selection! The GB&U and Outlaw Josey Wales are my favourite Westerns; Kelly’s Heroes, Play Misty and Magnum Force top my “others” category! Although, I have a soft spot for Where Eagle’s Dare, Eiger Sanction and Honkeytonk Man. 🙂 Haha, that is not a short shortlist is it! 🙂
