Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Even though the parades were cancelled and Chicago’s River lacked the festive “green”, you can still have a green beer!
No Painting Chicago Green!
The Coronavirus situation has forced us all to change the way we live our daily lives, as public events are being cancelled out of an abundance of caution…one such event is Chicago’s traditional “painting the river green.”
In fact, here is an update on all of Chicago’s St. Patricks celebrations:
The downtown Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which was set for today, as well as Sunday’s South Side Irish Parade and the Northwest Side parades are all cancelled.
The annual dyeing of the Chicago River will also be rescheduled “to a later date,” city officials said.
The city of Chicago began “painting” the river green in 1962.
Sad news to share, so I wanted to share my pictures of when I was in Chicago during this time of celebration – beginning with the “painting” of Chicago’s river!

I lived there 10 years and only saw the river once, I was always working, it was cloudy so not that beautiful emerald green, more of a split pea green like so many rivers today. Saw the parade once, that was fun.

We were there 5 times and loved the pageantry of it…the 8a drunkenness was something to observe as well – at least all were happy!

i was there years ago for this big day and it was wonderful. a sad loss for the day, among many others –

I reckon there must be more ‘Irish’ in America than there are in Ireland. 🙂
One ‘day’ I have never celebrated, as I have no Irish connections whatsoever.
