For example, Venice is 160 square miles – but only 3 feet above sea level!
It has more than 150 canals and 400 footbridges – and wasn’t built directly on the land of the islands but on wooden stilts!

As I commented last year, John, I have never been. And my desire to do so diminishes when I see photos of the crowds, and hear stories about the outrageous prices charged for everything. There does seem to be a doom-laden inevitability that it will one day be overwhelmed by the sea. What began as a waterside trading post grew out of all practicality as a modern city..
